ls1 guys look in

Hey Geoff, are your heads stock castings or ported?

Mine are bone stock with new springs milled 0.030". I am going to try to bump the compression this winter with a thinner gasket and another 0.010" off the deck (assuming I have enough P to V). I am hosed by those -14 cc dish pistons. I need to get closer to 11:1.

I might also try to get the exhaust valves ported. I think that is where the big gains are on these heads.

hmmm, interesting. Thanks. Man you could build your whole longblock for a bit more than a set of kick ass heads for LS1/LS6.

Holy crap - Look at JDP's cam:

240/252 .650/.661 114+3

Damn!

-Geoff

Yep, but you can tell its a nitrous cam (being he only made 505 NA). We made almost 520 rwhp w/ about a full point less compression, and under .620 lift, and way less duration then his cam had on a c6 vette through cats and stock ls2 injectors (the guy wouldn't do fuel system upgrades for some reason).

see i am a bit confused sean you said anything over 10:1 on the l92 heads will make it a dog, but whitehawk your aiming for 11:1

is 11:1 possible with pumpgas still or no

You can do 11:1 with pumpgas. My car is barely 10.0:1 right now, If I can get to 10.5 I think I will be lucky, it all depends on my P to V. I just think it would do better with more compression. There are a couple other people out there with cams similar to mine and they MPH higher at the track. The only big difference is in the compression and quench. You can't judge by dyno numbers. Track MPH is the best guide.

You just have to shop around, and make a decision you are comfortable with. You are going to get a lot of information, and you need to decide what you want to do based on the results you see other people getting.

The chamber needs more timming. It really likes 29-30 degree depending on camshaft. Hence why I say more compression depending on cam timming may or may not be your friend.

How many 6speed or stick shift cars vs automatics ?

I would have to double check on the count, I do know JDP and the vette I mentioned were both 6 speeds.

JDP's car is 11.5:1 and runs on 93

Obviously things like timing, cam choice, etc make a difference. I would also say JDP's car would have made more power w/ an 1 7/8 header instead of a 1 3/4

I hate to bench race but what do yolu think the odds of Whitehawks acar making 500hp on a Dynojet are with a 6speed.

I have been meaning to call Lidio to try to get on his dynojet after work one of these days...

If you look at my gains on Sean's Mustang dyno (150/120) compared to similar setups on dynojets, it is right there though. I don't think I will ever get an accurate pull without locking the converter up, though. The converter was originally a Yank SS3400, but with all the extra torque it is over 4000 now. It is eating a lot of torque.

I don't know, but geoff has had the option for a while now to bring his car down for a free pull on the dynojet to see. Still waiting I know he is an auto but it still would be interesting to see what it makes on a dynojet. I know I was sure surprised at the difference I experienced w/ my car between a mustang dyno and 2 Dynojets.

obviously i'm new to building big time engines and sean i'll be comeing to your shop later to see whitehawks car so i'll just ask most of my questions there.

i know everyone always asks the same question
but as for a cam how do i really know what to pick since that effects c/r and everything

i mean for my setup, thought about looking into getting the exhaust sides of the heads opened up.

i mean once i have a nice cam picked out i can then move onto how much to mill the heads and headgasket thickness right?

and for p to v clearence how do i know if i got too much cam by sticking the cam in and turning it over by hand? if i had a prob i'd have to buy another cam and ect.

alot of guys i read about have an auto so i know there cam would be diff compared to a 6 speed from what i've read.

oh and 88ls1blazer
are those numbers threw the stock 10bolt and a m6?

i mean sorry for all the questions but i've just never built a serious engine, only a stock rebuild is what i've done and had a few turbo cars

I have Friday off. What time?

I would look at around at the setups that are out there and find one to copy. We did my setup before the R&D was done, and I had my rotating assembly with the -14 cc before the L92's were even heard of.

for the most part, you don't know. You would have to trust someone/company to choose the correct cam for you. It takes years and years of hands on experience to really get a feel for camshaft selection. I have been selecting cams for people for almost 10 years and am not afraid to say if something is not in my ability to spec.

i mean for my setup, thought about looking into getting the exhaust sides of the heads opened up.

It costs the same to do the whole job, might as well take the plunge and do both. but just the exhaust could be done for sure.

i mean once i have a nice cam picked out i can then move onto how much to mill the heads and headgasket thickness right?

well yes and no. You need to decide how much you are going to cut the heads and such before hand. That will determine your compression which will affect your cam specs.

and for p to v clearence how do i know if i got too much cam by sticking the cam in and turning it over by hand? if i had a prob i'd have to buy another cam and ect.

not really totally true, you could always notch the pistons to accept the bigger cam, but going to a smaller cam or degreeing it differently may make a world of difference.

alot of guys i read about have an auto so i know there cam would be diff compared to a 6 speed from what i've read.

JDP's numbers were, yes
