Looking to cut my fuel bill in half maybe 2/3s

my brothers wife is selling her 07 camry hyrbrid, its a pretty good deal, nice car and gets awesome mileage.

x3? on the Saturn. I drive a 2001 SL1 5 speed. Was getting 42mpg in the summer, now it's down to 36 or so, but still great, IMO. Mine has 112K or so on it, and I have to add about 1.5 quart every 3K miles. Used to have a 2000 Chevy (Geo) Metro 5 speed. Very similar mpg's out of the Saturn, and it's a MUCH better car than the Metro. So I'd look for a Saturn SL or SL1..

Loved the gas mileage that my 96 SL2 got but it was one of the most uncomfortable cars to drive. Really needed some sort of armrest or console on the right side.

My 05 Cobalt 2.2 manual gets over 35mpg most of the time, worst I've seen yet is 30ish in the winter in stop and go. Got 40mpg driving to Cedar Point a few times now. As for parts, I don't know, I have 140k on the clock and haven't had anyhting go bad besides an o2 sensor and the front control arms' rear bushings. Besides that, just breaks, tires, basic maintance parts.

X2 on the Cobalt. My coworker drives from Williamston to Pontiac every day, gets 37-40 mpg with it. XFE model, so it's a 5 speed.

I had a 90 Accord that I got with 55k on it in 1994. I never got over 32 with it but I beat the living piss out of it. Never let me down. Did a clutch at 105k, crashed it at 145k in 98, and the only parts I ever put on it were that clutch tires and front pads. I dont think i ever changed the rear shoes. Body held up great too for being in upstate NY and MI its entire life.

Can't say anything bad about Hondas.... as a 13 year GM employee I wish I could, but can't.

Another thought is a 3800 car. Any of them. They clear 28-29/gallong highway, still have some nuts are cheap to maintain and relatively cheap to buy. Not 40 mpg but the cost of entry is low, you could buy a decent amount of gas for the purchase savings.

I agree on the Saturn. Just sold mine because I needed more room, but it never skipped a beat, got 32+mpg and I sold it with 175k on it. I had a 2002 SC2.

Here are my thought on the vehicles that get good mpg's, I drive nearly 200 miles everyday to and from work and when I first started doing it I wanted a car that gets high mpg's like you. I ended up with a 2002 Honda Civic 5 speed with the 1.7 litre, car was averaging about 35-37 mpg's but seating and ride was very uncomfortable for that long haul, get to work or home and my back would be sore and just feel cramped. Now my drive is 90 miles one way nearly 99% highway, I found that a comfortable ride that gets about 25mpgs was best for me so I guess it depends on your commute and driving style.

Damn bro where do you work? That's a long haul to make EVERYDAY. I assume you would move closer to your work if it were possible. Can't blame you for giving up MPG's for extra comfort with that kinda drive, I know I would.

I picked up a 2010 fusion 4 banger with a 6-speed. I do around 700 miles a week for work and I love this car. I get way better then the sticker said I would for MPG. My MPG avg for city and highway is 29.9. Mid 30's on the highway and I like the Ford Sync option too. I think it's a great daily driver.

TDI. My buddy drives 100 miles each way from Rochester Hills to Harbor Beach 5 days a week with his. Pretty much ideal conditions seeing as he goes almost non stop at 55-60mph the entire way. He averages something like 52-53MPG. Its an 03 Jetta TDI 5 speed.

X2 I love my Fusion!

I have a customer that buys every single Saturn that comes into our place. Wrecked, motor blown...he buys them all, fixed them and sells them FAST. Everybody wants a Saturn. Any car under $3,500 sells FAST. Get em while they're for sale.

One more thing...A guy I work with had a 2002 Focus S.W. 2.0L DOHC 5-speed manual. He got over 30mpg with it. And he could haul most items with the back seat folded down. We bought it wrecked with like 60k and he put well over 100k on it himself. Had around 170k when he sold it on CL. Still got about 2,400 for it too. He needed something newer and replaced it with a Cobalt.

He now has a Cobalt Ecotec with an automatic. He said it's under 30mpg. Somewhere like 23-26.

I never realized how cult-like the Saturn buyers were until I had mine for sale. A majority of the people that inquired about my car for sale would say stuff like "I own 4 other Saturns" etc.

A friend had a '92 Accord Ex, 5 speed. Nearly everyone in his family drove it as their car at one point in time. Sold it with just over 200k on the clock. He STILL sees it rolling around from time to time. Amazing thing. We beat the crap out of that car!

Cobalts make me nervous. They weren't the safest of vehicles, and the insurance rates reflect that.

Jetta TDI get's great mileage, however, buy-in can be pricey unless you want to go with a high-mile car. Like 160k or more.

Saturn really made a quality car, however, the interior isn't a nice place to be - IMO. Plastic, plastic, and more plastic! But they do run, and run.

I was filling up the grand cherokee (v8 full time 4wd) 3x/week at $60-70/fill-up. DO the math to see the cost each month.

I bought a new car. Now I fill up the new car 2X/week at $30/fill-up. (2013 fusion)

The money I save in gas alone makes the new car payment vs filling up the jeep.
and because it's a new car and not a SUV, the insurance is cheaper.... BONUS.

only thing wrong with them is they use oil when the mileage goes above 100k

Check the gas and fill the oil.

My buddy had a couple of these over the years. Even with the auto trans the thing never got below like 34mpg no matter what driving conditions plus they got the shit beat out of them and still kept going.

That sucks......I get just over 26mpgh combined with my 2010 V6 Escape.

--Joe

That's good to know. Bout to list her car for sale and put her in a 2008 Escape V6. We've been selling a lot of steering columns for these lately tho. I don't want to have an issue with the electric steering with her in it. :(

Yes, they sure are...if they own one, they either have more or owned quite a few in the past. This guy sells the living crap out of them...only way I can put it. People call him for more, he doesn't even have to try and sell them.
