So I am in the market for a truck. I do alot of hoghway driving adn a good deala of hauling, but when I haul I have to use my parents truck, which is not always available.

so in short, I am looking for one of two trucks, a chevy with the duramax or a ford with the 7.3 powerstroke. what would you choose or what is the better of the two? positives, negatives, etc all welcome. would like a good choice, ive driven both and am happy with both, but have never driven for long periods of time only short trips for a day or so

I'd say duramax with an allison but they had injector problems on some years that is pricey to fix. I havent heard alot bad about the 7.3's but earlier ones had forged rods vs later powdered, i have seen alot of transmissions take a dump though.

IMO
Cummins=best motor
Allison=best trans
F250=best chassis

.....and yes it's been done a bunch.......destroked.com :)

From my experience, the 7.3 is a warlord. I plow snow for a company with many PSD trucks. The old ass 7.3 is the most reliable of the bunch. The 6.0s are ok, but seemed to have more mechanical issues. I haven't spent much time in a Duramax, but will say that they are much quieter than the others. I know I got sick of the racket of the PSD sometimes while plowing. I actually went back to driving the V10 truck(not my gas bill:redface:) last season for that reason(and CD player/rear slider). Once in a while I missed the grunt but I survived.

What is your price range?

and noise will not be an issue, Ive always liked noise haha, not to be annoying to others, I just like hearing what I am driving

So, I have found a nice GMC 2500 with the 6.6 on craigslist, http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/cto/1446214579.html

Im gonna call them tonight. but am still unable to make my mind up. Ive been driving our 350 with the 6.0 in it and my buddies 250 with the 7.3 and its been alright, I like the overall feel of the trucks.and I love the feeling of the gm trucks.

im torn between ford and chevy basically.

should I just look for the best deal on both sides of the fence? because im sure id be just as happy with a ford as I would with the duramax Ive wanted forever.

If you want reliability go with the 7.3L. They will last forever and so will the trans as long as you keep it stock and dont mess with the tuners b/c the trans will eventually take a dump with the harsh shifts and added power. If you wanna chip the hell out of the thing and be one of those cool guys that blows alot of black smoke get the duramax :rolleyes:, they make more power. But get ready to be fixing it all the time.

Power Stroke FTW!

im not lookin to have a huge tune in it, if anything just something mild to switch up for towing. and I am basically stuck between the 6.6 and 7.3. what else happens with the 6.6? Im not looking to beat on it, I just want something with the power to haul heavy stuff, and get good mileage when not hauling

if you have a diesel you will not need engine mods for "normal towing"
the gale banks trans tuners worked great for my brothers motorhome
I'm thinking of adding one to my V10 clubwagon
for that matter
my E350 clubwagon with a V10 gets 15-16 mpg highway solo ,room for 7
and will tow up to 10,000 lbs
think about that when you are paying more for a diesel truck and more per gallon for fuel
how long will you drive it before you get a cost bennifit by going the extra cash for a diesel truck

I drive both trucks you are looking at...the Chevy/Duramax is my DD, and I plow snow with the F-350/7.3 so here's my opinion, which isn't worth much, lol -

If you want a truck that is gonna be an absolute workhorse, be virtually bulletproof (provided you keep it stock), and you're not looking to make it do double duty as a DD/hotrod, go with the Ford. Especially if you plan on getting in to any serious off-road situations regularly. You can't beat the solid front axle, the indestructable motor, and the fact that it was designed to be a heavy duty truck.

The Duramax trucks cater more toward the "I want a car, but I need a truck" crowd. The seating is like a car, the interior is very plush and car-like. As opposed to the tougher "feel" of the ford, the GM is more polished and refined. Drivetrain-wise, the engine/transmission are fantastic. The earlier trucks were prone to injector issues, but everything is gonna break at some point. If you want to use it to DD and tow average sized loads primarily, as well as play with it and go fast with a heavy truck, the GM gets it done. My Chevy made 603/1156 at the wheels, and I drive it daily.

god damn and I thought I was gonna have an easy decision, I really dont know what to get, I want both lol

yes that is very valuable for me. but it just made my decision alot harder lol

We have F-450's and 550's 7.3 and 6.0.....I've driven both empty and loaded. I personally like the 6.0 but it has had its issues. 7.3 has been good to us. I hate GM doesnt have a solid front axle. Ford look better IMO

the lack of a solid front axle is one thing that i dont like about the gm's

and also in your opinion what would be a better all around dd, work horse, versatile truck, interior and comfort arent high on my list, i enjoy both interiors and feels equally. i just want a truck thats reliable and will last me a long time and that fits my needs
