Justin Eilers was shot and died shortly after on Friday morning in an apparent domestic disturbance at an acquaintance’s home in Canyon County, Idaho. Eilers was 30 years old.

Canyon County sheriffs arrived at the residence at 10:44 p.m. MST, where Eilers was found shot and wounded.

"Emergency medical staff took live-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful," said Capt. Dana Maxfield.

Eilers was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy conducted Friday released the cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the chest. The bullet reportedly punctured Eilers’ lung before exiting his body, said Monte Cox, Eiler's longtime manager.

Cox said Eilers had gathered with relatives for the holidays, but tensions escalated with an ex-girlfriend, also in attendance. Eilers was asked to leave the residence, but was said to have refused and began throwing dishes and other objects in protest. The home’s owner was then said to have pulled a gun on Eilers and shot him in the chest after a brief verbal confrontation.

Eilers’ ex-girlfriend, mother, and young son were said to have been in the room at the time of the shooting.

James Robert Malec, 48, was arrested and charged with second degree murder in relation with the shooting, said Capt. Maxfield. It is believed that Malec is Eilers’ mother’s boyfriend. Capt. Maxfield could not confirm this relationship or Eilers' alleged interaction with the ex-girlfriend. Maxfield did confirm that numerous relatives were at the scene at the time of the shooting.

Eilers was introduced to the fight game by close friend and former UFC champion Jens Pulver, who saw potential in the former Iowa State middle linebacker. After a brief tryout, Eilers became a member of the formidable Miletich Martial Arts team.

A well-liked figure in the fight community, the athletic heavyweight quickly rose through the ranks and fought for the UFC heavyweight championship against Andrei Arlovski at UFC 53 in June 2005. The fight was stopped 4:10 into the first round when Eilers incurred a knee injury and collapsed to the canvas.

Eilers (19-7-1) appeared in the Octagon four times, and went 1-3 in the UFC.

The Boise native reeled off 10 victories in his next 11 fights and got his second title bid for the EliteXC promotion in 2008.

After a second-round loss to the much heftier Antonio Silva last July, Eilers announced he’d be moving down to the 205-pound division.

“He was really getting his fight career together,” said Cox, who called Eilers a good friend.

Wow!!!!!

Its pretty crazy all the deaths that have occurred recently in the MMA community.

Live a violent life, die a violent death.

They make their money pummeling each other within inches of death...I'm sure there are exceptions to my generalization, but I'd think it would attract a certain person and lifestyle.

Did the last two deaths both involve murder/suicides?

Wow your opinion is definitely not true. These guys are athletes who get paid to do what they are good at. Your opinions are the reason why MMA gets a bad rep. How many people have died in a cage fighting? More people have died drag racing then in MMA. So does that mean that drag racing is a violent life? There is an exception to every sport. Just like anything else.

BTW the other recent death involved suicide.

Just an FYI, drag racing isn't a blood sport:cheers:

They get paid to do what they are good at. Which is beating the shit out of other people. How does that not effect your day to day life?

What the hell... why not just shoot the guy in the leg or foot.
Then if he keeps coming... shoot him in the other leg.

Hope they put the shooter away for a long time.

Honestly, I have done martial arts for a pretty long time. People that practice for the good of the sport do not have intentions of killing their opponents or hurting them. Submissions have nothing to do with beating the crap of someone. There are alot of arts out there. Like I said their is an exception to the rule.

What I meant by the drag racing comment was that I hear people always talk about how violent MMA yet the amount of deaths in the cage or ring does not come close to other sports such as drag racing.

i agree but when you call it ''cage fighting'' it sounds much more brutal and vicious than calling it mixed martial arts

That's cool, I know some guys that are into too, and they aren't about to kill anyone. I'm admittedly not into it, but the matches I've seen have been brutal.

A car crash is a pretty violent thing. But I would have to say there is a difference between man to man combat violence and the type of violence you experience in a car or plane crash. For one, you are actually hoping to avoid any type of car crash. With mixed martial arts I'm guessing that if your goal is to avoid all contact you aren't going to last long:)

They said it was his mom's boyfriend that shot him. I'd guess there is some past history.

If someone turns violent and starts throwing shit and threatening people, and he's a trained fighter, and he's in my house.......I might shoot him.

Good point cause you know your not going to kick his ass of course a non lethal shot would do the trick
