Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel --- finally

looks good, I swear I saw one of these with an M plate a few months ago, although it was very quiet for a diesel it still sounded like a diesel

The liberty was a piece of shit in itsself, adding an equally shitty diesel engine to the mix made them even shittier.

I drove a handful of the European ones when working for our other company. Nice, tons of power. FWIW...Not sure how much I'd trust the reliability of the engine though.

My hope is that working with Fiat whom has a LOT more experience with small-displacement-diesels than Chrysler has typically had will have helped them on the reliability front.

I think the reliability will be ok, the engine has been used in the export models for a few years already. I think it will sell well provided they don't price it through the roof. A nicely equipped grand cherokee already gets pricey.

With Diesel running .50-.70 a gallon more, the fact diesel fuel pumps are always nasty, and not being at every station I think it will be a tough sell, but who knows.

Don't understand the fuss about the diesel, grand Cherokees have been sold with the 3.0l Mercedes Diesel engine since at least '07. I bought one in 08 with the Diesel engine and its yielded 25mpg on the highway since new.

i wish they would bring other cars over. I drove some diesel avengers and freemonts and got over 40 on the highway with both. I was trying to figure out how to Import a freemont before it got shipped

I believe the engines they are using are from VM Motori in this revision of the Cherokee.
Chrylser also did Compass/Sebring/Avenger/Caliber with the older VW2.0 for sale in Europe a few years back.
I was part of this project/calibration and integration. It was fun, but they shot themselve in the foot using an already old engine in their new platforms. I don't think they sold too many in EU.

When I was last in Germany I had a diesel liberty and that thing was a piece of shit. My Diesel Mercedes ML I rented was wayyy better of a motor

I would like to pose a question. To those that are excited about this engine being available are you going to go out and buy it? I personally do not see a demand for this vehicle like a lot of others may, dont get me wrong I have no problems with diesels and they have more than proven themselves in other markets. However, for the reasons trunk outlined plus the additional cost of the engine etc I just dont see them taking off like wild fire.

Yes, I would buy one as long as the price premium isn't too much. I don't think limited availability of gas stations with diesel is an issue; there are plenty by me. Maybe in some areas. I've noticed when the price of regular creeps around 4.00, diesel doesn't move much. What you are really getting is the torque of the 5.7 with better fuel economy than the 3.6. I will agree that the few diesel pumps I've used were nasty.

Station Wagons
Diesel Engines in Light Duty trucks and SUV's
300hp + AWD manual family sedans

All are "cool" ideas, but the demand vs. the dreamers never really make a market case. If it did, they would be here. There is always a "catch", if it was in my budget, or price range or I could afford it.
