Insurance - ever heard of this policy?

Yesterday I received my statements from State Farm with a summary of what I owed them, it was $250+ more then I was quoted! I have a Vibe and recently bought a Solstice GXP. When I called for a quote on the GXP, I told them it was a recreational vehicle and would be low miles (which would give me a discounted price). They gave me a reasonable quote, which made me decide to purchase the GXP.

When I called about the bill, they told me that they have a policy where if you are under the age of 25, your daily driver must be your newest vehicle! This is something I have never heard of nor did my insurance agent tell me when I got the quote. Thus, my 2004 Vibe only can be my recreational vehicle and my 2008 GXP must be my daily driver. Have you ever heard of this?

I feel like this is a misrepresentation by State Farm for misquoting me and then sending me a bill for over $250 more (for 6 month period) then what I was originally told.

Anyone heard of this policy before or have any ideas on how to combat it? Thanks.

Are you driving the Solstice right now? If not, see if you can drop the coverage to storage insurance.

Doesn't always work, I'm currently paying to cover a car I can't drive. :shake:

State Farm allows you to drop the insurance to storage insurance... I been doing this for about 3 years straight now... :arco:

I have to wait until after my first payment to drop the coverage... however, I'll still have to fight this issue once it's warm enough to drive it as I didn't anticipate driving it every day.... if they don't resolve this issue I'll definately be shopping for an insurance company.

They can't make you choose which vehicle is your primary...

No that's the thing, THEY are choosing which one is my primary and are telling me that my GXP can not be my recreational vehicle because it's newer than the Vibe.

State Farm did the exact same thing when I agreed to go with them. I called and told them (not in so many words) to eat a dick and didn't even give them a chance to explain. They knew what they were doing, they just play people like fools, and most people go along with the game and allow themselves to get fucked over.

They're selling a service, there are no rules as to what they can and cannot do.

My sister had the same thing happen to her about a year ago. I know it was with a different insurance company. You may want to shop around, but I don't think this is that uncommon of a practice.

Though if they quoted you one thing and delivered something else, I'd definitely be raising some hell over it if I were you.

Tomorrow I'm going to call the head agent as the one I'm working w/is not returning phone calls... I don't think she knows what she is talking about because she is the one that quoted the vehicle for me. I even stopped by the office before I picked up the car to pay half of my 6-month premium (the quoted one!) & to pick up my insurance cards.

I don't see how being under 25 can determine whether or not you can choose which car is your daily driver. Do you have to drive for 9 years before you're responsible / trustworthy enough to choose which car to drive?

I don't know if there is anything I can do since I was "tricked" into this policy w/a low quote but then get sent a bill for a much higher one, it seems like this is illegal.

Thanks for the thoughts & comments, I'm still pretty upset about this...

She probably cannot put storage insurance on it as she is still paying on it. Most likely a stipulation with her financial lender that she will maintain full coverage.

I had my lightning as my main vehicle ('99) and my grand cherokee as my second vehicle ('03). Insurance was cheaper ont he lightning than the Jeep.

Now, I just pay cash for my toys and during the off months, put them in my parents barn and their homeowners cover it. (so October - April, I don't pay insurance on the mustangs).

I would seriously look around at alternative insuranc to that which you have now.

Progressive does something similar to that. I haven't heard of State Farm choosing primary drivers or primary vehicles.

I know that we can choose which if your primary car and would be happy to give you a quote.

One of my staff used to work at State Farm, I will find out the scoop and either respond to this thread tomorrow. I know that their systems allows them to do things that are not correct and are not corrected until they get to underwriting.

One of my staff used to work at State Farm, .....

Is it the flirtious one????

Call John I just signed with him yesterday for my new boat. I am very happy with the service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I had my mustang and my Solara, they told me the same if I had my Solara as a recreational car. So to answer your question, yes it's a rule, but State Farm's the only one that had that dumb ass rule. Check with Jon Innes as he's a sponsor here and can help you out more.

For sure, I'm with allstate and my primary driver is my 89 Bronco II, not my 2004 Lightning, the Lightning hasn't ever been my primary driver since I purchased it when I was 23.

My Cobra had a lien and storage insurance 5 months out of the year.
