I got a call last Sunday that someone in New Hudson opened a Lowes card and charged $4300. I assume they had a fake drivers license, used my address and SSN. It got flagged a day later because the phone number didn't match my credit report. I freaked out and got Lifelock but didn't see any suspicious activity. Fast forward to yesterday and I get a new Menard's card with $3400 already charged on it. I placed a police report and activated fraud protection with Transunion. Just curious if anyone has experienced the same and did they do anything different with better results.

Look all the Bureaus. All creditors use different Bureau most of the time. For example, American Express may Pull a Trans Union to approve a credit card but then capital one May pull Equifax .

Also put a credit alert on your social so if anybody even tries to pull credit even though it’s locked it will alert you.

If you need any advice or direction feel free to give me a call anytime.

How do you get your credit accounts frozen?

What exactly does this mean?

How long does this action last?

I went through all four credit bureaus and placed a freeze. There was a cost associated with it, maybe like $50 per person total. Freezing the account means that nobody can run your credit for new loans credit cards or anything. If you want to get a new credit card o rloan, then you have to contact the credit bureaus and unfreeze your account with the PIN you set up when you froze the account and then refreeze it when done.

Happened to the wife about a year ago. Someone opened up at least 20 new credit cards and charged a lot of items. She cancelled hr 2 or 3 real cards and put a credit freeze on her. You have to call every 90 days to keep the freeze on, otherwise it expires. We don't use credit cards much anyway, so that part didn't hurt

grr

Restricts access to your credit report, which in turn makes it more difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name.

A few states, credit freezes expire after seven years. In the vast majority of states, a freeze remains in place until you ask the credit reporting company to temporarily lift it or remove it altogether. A credit reporting company must lift a freeze no later than three business days after getting your request. The cost to lift a freeze varies by state.
If you opt for a temporary lift because you are applying for credit or a job, and you can find out which credit reporting company the business will contact for your file, you can save some money by lifting the freeze only at that particular company.

good imo to protect your assets

Four?

It is completely BS that someone would have to pay to
have their name removed (frozen). I never signed up for
any credit reporting, I don't believe it is fair to charge me
to opt out.

It seems like a way to punish the consumer.

I don't use credit, don't want to use credit. I do
wonder what it looks like if your credit is frozen
when a "check" is done for employment or auto
insurance?

It is free to freeze your credit, but that expires every 90 days. You can call them and have them extend the freeze and that is what the wife does.

On a side note, while I don't typically use a 'credit' card very often, they are handy to have. Both Home Depot and Lowes offer 5% off anything you buy when using their credit cards. They occasionally run a 10% off promotion. Many other companies offer the same promotions like Best Buy. I bought my lawn tractor using the Lowes and a fridge using Best Buy. I haven't used the best Buy card since, but I do use the Lowes card. You can buy something and walk right over to the customer service center and pay it off.....

Just my .02....grr

Sounds like I'm on the right track.

Transunion is $20 a month but can freeze themselves and Equifax at the same time.
Experian was $10 to lock
You can lock Equifax for free, probably because they feel guilty from the breech a couple of years ago.

I know I should have done this a long time ago but the system is just broken. Just seems anyone can open accounts in your name with the same information given at an Urgent care.

Lifelock was $220 a year with a 10% discount on another open account (spouse). I'm not sure I see the benefit of using them as they can only monitor and you still have to pay the credit bureau to lock the accounts. I will probably cancel those memberships, reminds of those commericals. "I'm a crime monitor not a policeman, so I can't help".

I agree. I think some states make it free, but legislation always takes forever.

I'm not sure if soft pulls are blocked, I still get pre-approved junk all the time. I'd imagine I'd have to unfreeze it for an employment check, but then again I'm not sure it's any of their business unless I'm carrying a business card.

Sounds like I'm on the right track.

Some of the monitoring services scan the darkweb and other places for your information as well. I'm not sure how much it helps to know.

Rob,

I got Zander insurance instead.... 7 bucks a month every month I get a fraud report stating if anything was found. (they monitor the dark web) about 3 months ago I went on some random car website and entered a password (that I don't normally use because it felt a little "scammy" ) and 2 days later I got a call from Zander saying they picked it up in a dark web Chat room... If fraud is found they will assign a case manager to you and they will make all the necessary calls to clear your credit (SSN credit cards the big 3 ectra....

So these companies gather mass information on you and you have to pay them to lock all that info down!!!

Why isn't there a class action lawsuit against these credit bureau for gathering all this data without anyone's consent than not protecting it?

At least with Facebook you're voluntarily giving them all your info.

X2

It is a legal, large scale scam. Normally reserved for government use

Thanks Craig,
Ford actually offers services thru InfoArmor at a reduce rate so I will probably go that route instead.

Didn't you also just go on vacation? So possibly someone got your details from using cards for booking reservations and crap like that?

No not me, this is someone who had my license and SSN. I'm assuming from a credit application or maybe even urgent care. I recently sold a car and I'm second guessing myself if I left dealership paperwork in the glove box. Capital one is pulling Menard's receipt so I'm hoping they will share camera footage from the register transactions.
