I need a new roof ASAP

Any new information on roofers? Going to have mine done soon and this was good information to get started on getting estimates.
Was wondering if anyone has had good or bad experiences since this thread was started.
 
If you have a simple roof look into metal. I did my cottage a couple years ago it's a lifetime roof and was easy to install.

I did a full tear off and insulated under the roof, because of that it was 15-20% more than shingles. Without it would have been about the same. The trim is where the cost comes in so the more complicated the style roof it adds up. I won't shingle another roof, when our house needs one way down the line it'll be metal.
 
I ended up using Oak roofing. I have about 1,000sa ft house with a 13x22ft addition on the back. They tore off the entire house and covered in ice shield after replacing some wood. They put all new drip edge and vents in a color of my choosing. Then put a 50yr shingle on the house. The addition had to have every piece of wood ripped off because the old roof was glued down. So they re sheated the 13x22 and installed what they called a low slope roof that is glued down again. Same color and grain as my shingles. They started between 7am and 8am and where all done by 4pm. For just the house paid in cash it was like $4,200. Since they had to rip off about 8 or 9 sheets on the addition and re sheet it, then put the low slope roof on I think the total I paid was $5,200 in cash. This company also has done my parents roof and my wife's parents roof. No complaints. Number is 248-547-7663. John Claude and Mike are the 2 owners.
 
Not looking forward to a roof in my future! 2 story home with 3 layers on top. My base layer are Cedar shingles from 1938...i got friggin wood up there! It will need plywood, as there is none. I dont think sheets of wood exsisted back then....haha

Thanks. I had it done a few weeks after I posted this thread about 2 and a half years ago lol. When I roofed for a living we did a lot of shake roof tear offs. A house in Detroit had 2 layers of shingle and shake under that. It was an 10 or 12 pitch. Imposilsible to walk and had to be jacked and boarded everywhere. The bill on that house was just over. $9,000 as a side job. I dispise shake roofs lol. Have to use a damn pitchfork to rip them up.

I figure 8-10 for sure. I bet they would need a few man-lifts to get up and around this kind of job. Maybe some scaffolding... You did this for a living so at least you know what you are getting, thats a big deal.

Also you shouldnt need plywood. When I roofed at age 17 and 18 we did roofs all over the place. We would be in port huron for weeks at a time and every house we tore off was cedar shake. They all were slat boards instead of plywood sheets. We would just lay ice shield and felt over it and start singling.
