Generators

Since I recently added a chinchilla to my zoo I have to keep her room at a lower temp as they can not tolerate high temps and will die. I have a separate AC window unit in the room I keep her, with the high temps I am concerned about brown outs or black outs as the summer goes on or just straight outages.

I also feed my dog raw and have a stand up freezer packed full of meat that I would hate to loose in the event of an outage for an extended period.

I need to know what size generator I would need to run an AC unit 5000 BTU, the freezer at a minimum. I know absolutely nothing about generators

Look at how many WATTS each device says it draws, add them up, multiply by 1.5, and thats about the size generator you should get.

Example (Freezer 1500w + AC 1000w)=2500w*1.5 = 3750w

They are not GREAT, but harbor freight usually has a good price on smaller generators like that.
Harbor Freight 3500w

Buy a honda, most dependable and quiet. Will cost you a little more but it will run more than one summer.

is it a new freezer? how old is the window unit?

Window unit is new and freezer was bought used so no idea, but it looks newer.

Thanks

to get 3700 watts you need a 5 kw generator (read the running output compared to max output)

and Ill bet the a/c draws 15 amps on startup
same for the freezer thats 3000

7.5 kw generator runs 5 kilowatt which will be enough to run your freeezer window a/c and house fridge and a couple of lights

be ready to spend at least 2 to 3 grand on a good one !

harbor freight = cheap junk

honda eb series best money can buy

dewalt also makes bad ass generators

they arent that much unless you plan on getting one that can run youre entire house

Nope...the main thing I need is the AC unit for the Chinchilla and it is a small 5000 btu window unit. The freezer is secondary and I would really only hook that up if it was a extended outage. As the meat is frozen and can thaw and refreeze for the dog and have no problems. I just wouldn't want it past cold

same goes for the jinsue crap they sell at harbor freight

right now I am trying to figure out how/if buying something so expensive for a what if if justifiable. Obviously I don't want to be stuck in a situation where the temp could kill my girl, but 3,000 is a lot of money for something that I may use one time!

X2

Just fired up my Honda EU this morning. We lost power last night and it still wasn't on, fridge was getting warm. I've had this generator for several years and never had an issue. Use it racing, camping and for when power goes out.
