Ford Ranger owners... past and present... 'tis a sad day

Owned a 1996 Splash and a 2003 FX4, both bought new and lasted over 150,000 miles with no issues before I sold them. I will admit they aren't very practical for a family or if you use a truck to tow over 5000#.

I haved owned 3 in my 26yr of time.Great trucks I still drive my current 1992 ranger as a winter-tow truck.I have hooked up a trailer and towed my mustang to milan with no problems all last year 3.0 5 speed with a 410 takes you a lot of places.Awesome little trucks. The v6 rangers were not the best gas milage but mine have always started every day.

The problem is that they tried to make them like a small fullsize truck. Instead, they should have targeted them as cheap vehicles that met crash test standards.

In ~1999 you could lease a S10 2.2/5 speed with no radio for like $80/month. The truck was like $8k or something. If they made cheap compact trucks they would sell like hotcakes. Instead, you have $23,000 Colorados with I5s and Rangers with the worst V6 on Earth.

The problem is to make them competitive with best in class engines the price point would be in F-150 range. Ford is looking at a FWD small (cheap) pick up (think transit connect with a bed) for the US. Might work.

I'd buy one.

The 4.0 was only the worst V6 because of the gas mileage, however it was probably the most reliable V6 in the market.

The sticker on my loaded FX4 was $28K, which is stupid.

I literally had this exact conversation with my coworker 1 minute ago.

Great truck, very reliable, but poor gas mileage and $28,000 for a compact p/u is absurd. They priced themselves right out of the market. I bought my '04 FX4 in '06 and I think I paid $14,500 for it. No way in hell I'd even look at a new one on the lot.

I saw an "M" plate "Ranger" the other day going down 94 in Dearborn. Looked bigger, 4 doors, similar to the Explorer Sport Track. Maybe the "Ranger" name will be coming back sometime in the near future?

I find your comment kind of amusing seeing how GM and the Japs think there is a market for them.

Why is that amusing? The Ranger is 2nd only to the Toyota Tacoma in the small pickup market. They hold 24% of that market and it's still not enough for them to keep the truck in production. It's a dollar and cents move. Why produce something that's market is getting smaller and smaller. The profit isn't there.

BTW GM went BK with their thoughts on "market share" before. It's easy to take a shot at something when your debt as been erased. Ford is becoming lean and mean, why fight for such a small market. I've sold ONE Ranger this year. I begged the customer to take a F-150 which would have been a better deal, but they just had to have a smaller truck. He is now regretting it, but it's a little late.

We are one of the top 10 dealers in the nation, we have 5 in stock and have delivered only 42 this year. The little truck is dead.

Ranger

In reply to 91trunk. I find it amusing because that is how I feel. I do understand how dealers try to extract the maximum amount of money from a customer. They will actively try to sway someone away from the smaller trucks to point them to the cash cow full sized truck. I am a Ford retiree who never owned anything but a Ford product and as much as this hurts to say, I will be shopping the competition when it's time to replace our 05 Ranger Edge.

2000 Ford Ranger XLT 4 Door Flare Side... Black, chrome wheels, premium sound, dark charcoal interior... my first new car... I'll never forget it.

1998 Ranger 4.0l w/auto was my first car, we beat the hell out of that thing never let me down once. I've always thought they were cool looking trucks!

Dude you're a trip, dealers don't make the market. There is NO MARKET anymore. Ford has 24% of the small truck market yet that's not enough to keep them producing.

It's sad that you would look to the competition when Ford is producing a full size truck that can get better fuel economy and is safer than the Ranger. I know you put in your time at Ford so you deserve your retirement benefits, but you'd buy from another car company? Really? I sure hope Ford never cuts those benefits because too many people aren't buying Ford products.
