Craiglist idiots - I'm tired of it!

I think living closer to a main city would net you the same results we complain about!...lol I don't even bother with CL anymore. I was basically giving a washer away, and had 5 or 6 people tell me they were coming to not show up. Big waste of my time. THe lady who did finally show was a new single mom. I gave her dishes, and a few other items to help her start her new home. I appreciate when people actually show up! SAD.

I do live near a larger city, a lot of my customers come from
the Ann Arbor area. Like I said I’ve learned a lot of “tricks”
to dealing with craigslists (CL) people. So I have to get people
to drive all the way out here (30 - 40 min. drive one way).

Oh, and doing a "free ad" on CL is a no-no. Those are nothing
but trouble. I found you can sell trash easier than you can give
it away.

I guess its time to list some of my guide lines / rules.
(almost 5 years on CL)

When a customer calls & asks about coming out, I remind them to
“call before you come out, to make sure I’m here & its here”
I then remind them “I don’t accept any kind of checks – cash only”

After that I then go about my days work. Then if they call & say they
are on there way I know they will be here in 30 to 40 min. I don’t
waste my day waiting around for somebody to show up. (never go & meet)

What I found is the closer the appointment is from the time they call
and say they’ll be coming out, the better the odds are they will show up.

If they call & say “I’ll be right over, I’m leaving now”….…. 90+% They will show
If they call & say “I’ll come check it out tomorrow” ……..…60% They will show
If they call & say “I’ll come see it in a few days”… less than 50% They will show

This is why every time a customer says they’ll be coming over anytime other than
right now – I WARN them they must call to confirm before driving out (that gives
me 30-40 mins heads up)

Another rule is, the more costly or rare the item, the farther the customer will
travel to come get it. Folks will drive from Detroit for items $100 & up.

I get folks from the west side of the state for items $1,000 & up.

I could write a book on the do’s & don’ts of selling on craigslists – and
I just might do that!

Wait...so your selling some home audio stuff? Ok. I need your front channel, and satellite speakers. Will u take 15 bucks for them? Get back to me asap via telegraph or Ham radio since those are my main source of communication. Also, will u ship for free? I'm located in Australia. Thanx

It's a lot of BS to deal with, but I sold my quad and Camaro on there to the first person to actually show up and look at it. I like the trade offers that people make on there. Just as bad as Milan Dragways classifieds. People offer a lawn tractor with no mower deck and a stuck gear, a dirtbike with a blown engine, a PS1, a dog, and a subwoofer enclosure with a blown sub as trade for a car.

Wow, I just had another CL sale. A very nice older couple drove
from Ohio, a 130 mile round trip to buy a light fixture from me
for $39. I had it set up / powered up to display. They took 2 to
3 mins. to look at it & handed me the $39 & said “thank you”.

It is so nice to deal with good people. It almost makes up for
those not-so-nice people.

I just had somebody offer me this for the Mustang

http://detroit.craigslist.org/okl/cto/2544125429.html

And this was after I said the only trades that I'm interested would be something with 100k or under, 4 doors, and 25+mpg, with more room than a Neon/Focus/etc...

Seriously? Offering a 212k mile, 2WD, regular cab, rusty, V6 fullsized pickup truck that you can't sell for $2200... to trade for somebody for a $4000+ Mustang?
