Can an employer charge an employee for damages.

Ahh. Gotcha. Wasn't sure what you meant there. I was confused because I wouldn't buy a "new" vehicle that was already jacked up and repaired.

If the damage is excessive we will turn them into used cars.

I have been a porter at 2 collision shops and a large dealership and not one ever charged any employee for damages. This is why businesses have insurance and when working around cars accidents are bound to happen and it is total BS to charge an employee for minor accidents that happen. If its a total then thats a differetn boat

Right, the business should just eat the damages. I mean it's their fault for letting people drive.

No but if you have a company vehicle you have to estimate that you might have minor repairs to the vehicle. Why pay for insurance if your going to force the employee to pay.

Every place i ever worked if a tech or porter damaged a bumper, light or any other part of the vehicle it was covered

Those business owners are crazy. What reason does the employee have to respect or care for a customers car. If they damage your car they dont care.

Do you know how insurance companies work? The more claims you file the higher your rates become. Why should a company take it on the chin for a employees negligence?

Please don't apply at any of our dealerships.

Everytime a car was damaged it was usually cause of a misjudgement in the shop well moving vehicles. It was not like they were damaged during joy riding. If you have ever been in a collision shop they are often very tight with lots of equipment around and minor accidents happen. I have yet to run. Into one of the accidents being from a person not being responsible. They were all true accidents, i'm not saying this is. The norm but im just voicing my opinion on this situation.

Just playing devils advocate here but yes it is their fault if they let some dumb kid take a car out and crash it. Do you think a judge would find for you guys if you tried to sue some fuckhead kid for your deductible? I'm being serious. Even though I feel the kid should be responsible, I wonder if he could be held responsible? In 20 years of working in the auto repair industry I've never heard of anyone being held responsible for damage. And I've seen some pretty stupid and negligent shit that should have resulted in a beating long before a payment!!

What ever happened to being careful? If you have to move a car and its that tight in the get someone to watch you from the outside. Its alot cheaper than saying fuck it and smacking up someone car because its crowded. In the end the person behind the wheel is still in control. If it was your own car in there that you had to move id be willing to bet there would be alot more care to make sure you dont hit anything.

Not only kids crash cars. We have had techs, sales people, managers, etc. crash cars before.

In the 20 of working in the dealership I've seen plenty of people pay for damages................including me. From the time I was 18 to almost 20, I paid $73.67 a week for wrecking a T-bird. My Uncle told me it was either pay it or never work here again. It was a tough lesson, but I paid the money.

We have never had to go to court, so I don't know.

I agree.

Right, the business should just eat the damages.

Correct, unless there is a reoccurring theme.

.

Its
The cost of doing business.

Yup.

So the employee should have no responsibilty for his/her actions?

Yes they should...we're talking accidents though.

 The cost of doing business is having someone wreck a car? Really? How many companies do you own?

Lol...

I worked at dealers for 15 years....I saw only 1 insurance claim....as trunk says, you don't want to ever do it unless necessary..which equals $$$$$$

Umm, accident.

Yup, I agreed with you...and I wouldn't if I knew if I made a mistake I would have to pay. No way to run a business IMO.

I had one major mishap....cost the dealer about 5 or 6k. Never even came up on who was paying....the dealer did.

Lol. That's cool. I don't disagree with what you are saying. I was just wondering because like I said, I have never been there and hope I never am! I think it's a great policy and will probably make people think a little bit before they act like a butthole.

Yeah, but it's a business model that has worked for 31yrs and we have had people here for that many. It's called being responsible for your actions.

Don't get me wrong, not everyone pays, it's taken case by case. If it was an accident that was unavoidable (ie someone not screwing around) we take that into consideration. That's ANOTHER reason we have video cameras in all areas of the dealership.

Then we are in agreement. Accidents are accidents....business pays and all are happy no one got injured.

Screwing around, zero tolerance.

There is not such thing as an "accident" when moving cars around at a dealer ship. ANY and ALL damage is avoidable. It's just a matter of how much attention a person pays while doing there job. If it is that close ask for a spotter. If you don't ask for help spotting the car then it is your fault.
If the "accident" was at all avoidable then the person that caused the "accident" should be held responsible.

If the damage is excessive we will turn them into used cars.
Same thing here.

I have been at my current employer for almost 13 yrs. We have had our share of accidents on and off the lot, broken expensive parts, damaged equipment ect.We also enforce the policy that if you damage a vehicle and its under our $1k ded, you pay the entire bill or the $1k ded if applicable.I am in the business to MAKE money not pay for others mistakes. And I have been on both sides. I have had my share of payroll deduction's when I was just getting started on the shop floor. Now being the manager I watch things closer.
