Blackberry users not happy

Why BlackBerry Users Will Defect

Despite bells and whistles, the device misses the 'fun factor.'

Call it a matter of touch-screen envy, but many BlackBerry users are starting to feel the 24-month-contract itch.

And they're willing to switch to Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone or Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Nexus One, according to a recent study.

Conducted by the online market researchers Crowd Science, the survey results show that Research in Motion (RIMM) BlackBerry users are more likely to abandon the brand than iPhone or Android users. When asked of the likelihood of buying a particular brand of cell phone or smartphone if the purchase was made the following day, 39% of BlackBerry owners said they "definitely or probably would" nab an iPhone. And roughly one-third of the participants claimed they'd snatch up an Android phone.

Meanwhile, the fierce Google-Apple war seems to have bled into the user base.

An overwhelming majority of iPhone users -- 92% -- would likely stay loyal to the Apple device, and only a tad fewer Android owners -- 87% -- made a similar claim.

However, Apple zealots who unleash a fervent hatred for opposing teams may have met their indignant match. While 15% of iPhone users "definitely or probably would not" recommend an Android device, a whopping 45% of Android users would never dare give Steve Jobs' baby a thumbs up. Whether that's a product of outsider's scorn or buyer's remorse, the study didn't pose the question.

But as the battle between Apple and Google rages on, BlackBerry users look on with a degree of envy.

Despite commanding a hefty lead over the iPhone in the smartphone market share -- 42% versus 25%, respectively -- the numbers for RIM have begun to drop, along with Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows Mobile and Palm (PALM).

According to comScore, RIM's market share dropped a percentage point in the fourth quarter of 2009 from the third quarter, and Apple's rose 1.2%. PCWorld's Tony Bradley calculated that, given the same rate of rise and decline, Apple could surpass RIMM's market share by February 2012. And buoyed by the success of the Motorola (MOT) Droid, Android showed the biggest gains -- rising 2.7% to 5.2%.

Crowd Science Chief Executive John Martin addressed the study in the company blog. "These results show that the restlessness of BlackBerry users with their current brand hasn't just been driven by the allure of iPhone." He added, "Rather, BlackBerry as a brand just isn't garnering the loyalty seen with other mobile operating systems."

iPhone, Droid and BlackBerry.

So what's the allure of the competitors? Why are BlackBerry users more willing to jump ship?

BlackBerry has long been the choice of tech-savvy executives who are wirelessly tethered to their jobs. But as evidenced in the study, only 7% of BlackBerry owners still use their device exclusively for work. For years, the smartphone has ceased to be merely associated with work -- an evolution that Apple played a large role in influencing. However, the BlackBerrys, the Palm Treos, and the Windows Mobile devices never successfully adopted the veneer of "recreational smartphones" nearly as well as Apple or Android.

Put simply, iPhones, Droids, and Nexus Ones just look like more fun. And as the "fun factor" became a significant reason why smartphones became as popular as they did, any manufacturer still focusing on the business aspects fell out of favor with users.

What's the appeal of a physical keyboard if the iPhone can remember where you parked? Why use Microsoft Exchange when the Droid works seamlessly with Gmail -- a service more businesses are using anyway? Is there a point to waiting for a BlackBerry version of an app that has dozens of variants available in the App Store or Android Market?

Unless a new BlackBerry device sheds the brand's stodgy work image, RIMM is going to miss out on all the fun -- and customers.

I don't know anyone with an iPhone that has had their phone pocket dial 911 or that frequently turns itself off in their pocket. Maybe that has something to do with the Failberry down fall.

Hmmmm...I just got a blackberry on Saturday and I love it. The reasons why??

~It has a full REAL keyboard. My fat ass video game fingers cant type worth a crap on that virtual keyboard stuff.

~It DOES NOT have a touch screen. I hate those with a passion.

~I dont know what they are talking about with it not linking up directly with Gmail accounts...because mine is right on my home screen. One click and its in checking my mail. It also notifies me when I get a new email.

~Apps are fun...but I didnt get my phone to play video games. Thats why I have a PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii in my house. And that comment it says "an iphone can remember where you parked"...yeah..so can my brain. Cool app I guess, but totally useless unless your a dumb dumb.

~There's Blackberry chat. All my buddies with BlackBerry's also have this automatically on their phones. Its like AOL IM with all your BlackBerry buds. I think its pretty cool. I use it all the time.

~The battery lasts much longer than an iphone on a single charge. My last phone had to be plugged in every night if I used it a lot. Not this one!!!

While I do think the iPhone is very very neat, I didnt want a toy. I wanted a phone that I could type fast on, access the internet and surf the web, and check my email on the fly. Thats why I got a Blackberry.

I for sure love my phone more than any other phone I've ever played with. (and my 12 year old has a iTouch...its a iphone without the phone part.) I have such a hard time typing on that..and the screen is always smugged because of fingerprints. Its slick, but not for me.

Palm and RIM rested on their laurels and got their ass handed to them by Apple and Google. Both Palm and RIM are almost completely irrelevant at this point.

Can you surf the web while you're talking to someone? especially when you're on hold with your favorite customer service line;)

I have had a BB for about two years, and will be going with an android based phone next. No real complaints on the phone, everyone else is just offering more with their OS

Isn't that a product of your carrier and not your phone? i.e. iPhone can do it because it is on AT&T but a Blackberry on AT&T/T-mobile could also do that, couldn't it?

My Curve has never turned itself off and never called anyone from my pocket unless I forgot to turn the keyboard lock on. User error is not BB's fault. I have at least 5 friends I can think of off the top of my head that have BB's none of them have ever had this issue.

Are you high? Palm is on it's deathbed, no doubt about that. The only thing saving them is the fact that there's a TON of Palm software out there that people use in their jobs. Apple should buy them out and buy the rights to emulate Palm programs, problem solved.

But businesses use Blackberry and aren't switching any time soon.

The Storm is a touch screen phone, but I personally went with the Tour because I would rather have a real keyboard.

My work is 100% with Blackberry. Mine is FREE so BB for the win, even if I am not allowed to text! (have all other features)

When I got my phone at work, the first thing I said was "Can I use this for personal calls?"

Second thing I asked was "Can you add the unlimited text package?"

:D

I had unlimited, then with all the cutbacks last year we lost Texting as a whole.. I am still not complaining.

Big X2 on all of that, couldn't have said it better. I love my Blackberry Tour.

The Iphone is a toy. IF there is a shift from the blackberry to the Iphone it will be a long time coming. First off, they have to gett off of only ATT's network. Secondly, they have to take care of all the little things that make the Blackberry a better phone for business app's. Thirdly, Blackberry offers a standard device and a touchscreen device. Apple only offers touch screen. That will never fly in the corporate world.

I just went from the iphone to a BB and couldn't be happier. Granted, I had the original iphone and not the newest ones, but I spent 2 yrs with my email messed up and it always crashed/locked up, etc. The day my iphone went off and replaced with the BB everything went back to normal. Now I can't play baby video games on it but everything I need is right there now.
