Attention Dog Owners

Well two weeks ago I had to put my dog down. He wouldn't eat and was acting depressed. I figured he was depressed because I hadn't spent time with him in a day or two because of work, but my girlfriend talked me into taking him to the Animal Hospital, they did a blood test and he had high toxins in his kidneys. I couldn't afford the bill so I took him home for the night after he was given some antibiotics and some fluid under his skin to keep him hydrated. The next day he was taken to another hospital and put on bags to flush his kidneys out. Every so often they would do a blood test to check his levels, and they kept going up. The doctor had faith in him as he just turned 3 the day we took him in, and felt he was a very strong god so he kept him overnight for 3 days at no charge to us.

Well, after all was said and done I had to make a decision because he kept getting worst. He actually shit out skin from a rat the same day, so we had to flush him again hoping that, that was the toxins in him. Everything was getting worst and after 3 days in the hospital he was starting to twitch, you could also see in his eyes that he wasn't feeling good. That day I put him down.

Moral of the story, I spoke to the Vet and it seems multiple cases (Over 30) have been reported of rats/mice poisoning dogs. Make sure your yard is clean, and that there are no ways for a rat or mouse to live on your property. My yard is clean, but my neighbor is a hoarder. I never thought this would happen, so just giving you guys a heads up. It's pretty tough putting down a 3 year old dog to something you'd never thought you'd have to go through for another ten years.

I am sorry to hear about your dog.

I have heard that certain things they put in the municipal water supply can play hell on your pets.

VERY sorry to hear that. I had a pest control guy once tell me not to put out poison for mice/rats. When I asked why he said "Because they'll go somewhere and die, like in your walls. Then they'll stink." I'll bet your pup ate some poisoned rat. Just curious, were his feces black? Usually Warfarin (rat poison, (and heart medication in small doses)) will cause them to bleed internally and basically digest themselves. Also causes GI bleeding which shows up as black in the stools. Just curious.

Main point though, very sorry to hear about your dog. My Dobe just turned 13 and I know someday I'll lose him. Can't say I'm ready at all for that day.

I believe it was towards the end of the time he was at the hospital but we don't know if it was his kidneys doing that or not. He started to drink but he just wouldn't eat.

Thanks guys.

Sorry to hear...
That's what I been checking and looking into... Sooner or later I want to get my g/f a Newfoundland dog and want to make sure that shit doesn't happen...

After this happened I put out close to 15 rat and mice traps. I only caught a squirrel and about 4 birds lol. No rats yet, makes me kind of wonder if he got them all before he passed. I figured he would've left me some fun lol.

I wonder how loud my .22 with Colibri ammo would be

That sucks man, I know how hard that is to do.

I have a Yorkie and they were bred to hunt rats during the rat infestations in England a long time ago. I wonder if my dog is less susceptible because of that. No question if there were a rat out there he would go after it and trust me he would catch it.

No louder then a cap gun would be...

Sorry to hear, Losing a dog at such a young age is definitly not easy, I lost my Golden a year ago at 4, It's the worst when it's unexpected.

Man that sucks. I'm glad I live more in the country although I've got to worry about coyotes getting my little guy.

That sucks very sorry to hear. Rats will come around when people don't pick up their dog shit in their yard. Rats eat dog shit as gross as it sounds. If you had neighbors with dogs that did not give a fuck and put out Decon that would suck.

Heard a few coyote grab a rabbit in my backyard when I was in the garage the other night. Definitly do not want a small dog getting tangled up in that. Glad my pooch was inside cause she was wigging out in my sunroom trying to get out there, And she is probablly just now getting to the size that a coyote wouldn't mess with her.

Tough loss. So sorry.

I might add, pay attention to the food/treats your feeding your animal... and where it comes from.
Lots of animal food out there thats poisonous to animals.
It well documented..... and the manufactures have no intention of stopping production or removing it from the shelves.
