Are o2 sensors required on Ls turbo build

I was wondering If I have to use the o2 sensors on my LS turbo build. Can I just have the car tuned without them. If I need them, where should I locate them and why. Thanks

your gonna need that o2 for good idle quality and driveability as well as to keep your engine safe, that o2 is going to help regulate and adjust your A/F Ratios even after its tuned up.

I would have to add right and left side, so I would need to put them in the pipes right after the exhaust manifolds. That way it can read both banks separately. Will the o2 sensors live in that high temp environment?

Heats not and issue Fluids are make sure you arent puking any water/anti-freeze from the engine for whatever reason or oil from the Turbo that will kill the O2. Also is this a street car or moreso race car because most guys use just one O2 right near the Turbo's downpipe before they split it into duals if you were going that route. You use that one sensors data for the whole engine than you have to read the plugs after a pass or a pull for individual cylinder tuning.

Street car so drive-ability is a major concern. The engine is basically stock and I would love to stay very street friendly.

I would also ask the tuner...might have a better idea of what they need so that it is a happy driver.

I had them, but ended up turning them off because it was easier to tune without them. it had bad idle issues because I had to use such big injectors and my motor was smaller. 60#s on a 5.3 had a bad tip in stumble with them, as soon as they were turned off, it drove like stock

Thanks, I think I will try and have it tuned without the o2's
the 02s are never really shut off. Its the diagnostic that can be shut off so the service engine light doesnt come on when u unplug them. You can run the car either way. Car will drive better on the street with em hooked up.

actually, if it is tuned and set for open loop only, the o2s are not needed, that said, I will always use them

My car is setup for open loop speed density. No Maf or o2's. It drives great, it really depends on the tune. The biggest factor is if you drive out of the altitude it was tuned at. If you want better driveability and fuel mileage I would keep it closed loop. The reason why some people ditch the O2s is because they burn up fast due to pressure build up pre-turbo. You could always have a wideband after the turbo in the downpipe and have it referenced to the ECU.

Thanks for the replies. I had it tuned with out the O2s and have a wideband downstream of the turbo for reference.
