Anyone know of a GOOD car stereo shop/guy in the Detroit area?

I am looking to have the some work done and advice on my daily driver Jeep Cherokee and I am looking for the right source to do it without totaly breaking my bank account.

I currently have the following:
Pioneer DEH-P7500MP
Pioneer GEX-P910XM XM Receiver
Rockford Fosgate replacement speakers
JL Audio 10" Subwooofer
Pioneer GM-X332 Subwoofer Amp

I would like something a bit newer, more powerful and definitely better sounding. I don't need much in the bass department, I like to feel the music but I am more of a rock and metal listener so I want a system designed more for that. The last thing I want to do is make my neighbors piss their pants with bass thumping. Rap is not my thing. I am not looking for a pro competition system. No wild fiberglass fabrication, no neon and bling bling but I just want a serious setup that is solidly designed, is powerful and an evolution of what I have now.

I need a system planned out, either by buying new stuff or utilizing what I have now and adding to it. What I have now is okay, bit I am not getting a "wall of sound" that I am hoping to find. I need someone who can take a little bit of time to help me figure out what I am trying to accomplish and then suggest what I need to buy and what I don't need to buy for the end result I am trying to attain. Then of course I will need it all installed. I might want more speakers added to non-stock locations, but that is more up to the pro I am hoping to find. I also need the wiring redone, the factory wiring is breaking down (7 year old vehicle).

I don't care if it is a shop or a person who does it on the side as long as the work is quality and the price is fair and whoever does it stands by their work. One requirement if it is not a shop that does this is that the work is still done by someone with professional experience. Hell, I would love to help if necessary so I can learn more about it but I sure don't want to get in anyone's way. My own garage can even be used for it but I am still not opposed to having a shop do it. Whatever as long as it is done right.

I know of one source that has done minor work for me in the past, but I would like to know what my options are and I am sure you some of you guys here have your sources, so please point me in the right direction if you can! TIA!

Dont kow anyone, but let me know if/when you sell your current setup. My beater needs a setup

Will do, there isn't anything "wrong" with what I have now, but I got bit by the bug and want more.

Palco Electronics on Eureka Rd used to be awesome. I haven't dealt with them in some time but they did really good work back when i was into it.

Polk MOMO componets in the doors and dash.
2 10" Directed SX series subs(custom box for them)
Directed D2205 amp
Kenwood KDC-X990
And some Rockford lines.

Id do it but I dont have the space anymore. I can though get real good prices on said items.

Let me know what you want!I wholesale wheels and tires and car audio on the side,Im setup with a few companies

soundwaves.....not exactly detroit, but everyone i know that has done business with them has nothing but good things to say about them

soundwaves is a pure hack shop. if you want quality work stay away from there. doug being the most skillful there is a good guy but dave works him too hard to put out anything quality at the shop directly. i saw plenty of things come back for issues when i took my car there and the work i had them do to my car was anything but worthy of a recomendation..

autoway can be decent depending on the time of the month and year. like most places of it's kind i've been there twice in one day with two different pricings.

civic audio off of vandyke in utica isn't known for their name but they also have good prices and can get almost anything.

if your south of 9 mile on gratiot hit up audiotrends and talk to simon, he also can have good deals on some things but they don't carry everything.

if your looking for quality install that's cheap i wish you luck, best bet is to find one of your members to help you out. what your asking for isn't anything complicated so any reputible shop should be able to throw it together reasonably.

if you are just replacing factory style things with a simple amp and sub setup why not do it yourself? it isn't hard..

best bet is to hit up ebay with your parts list. alot of the 04/05 models are on there dirt cheap and the equipment is still very good.

this is the start of a custom door pannel soundwaves did for me...

2 years later and it's so screwed up i'm just waiting for summer to have a bonfire!

i took my car there with a nice little $300 setup i built myself, we laughed and they claimed they could do better. 7 months and thousands later and i can't use a thing they made..

i was leary because some of the things i saw come out of there were much like the photos on their website but i figured with the time i was giving them they would be ok, nope... really unfortunate though because i think doug can do some good things. dave just doesn't give him the time.

pick me up some fiberboard and a couple of planks of wood with a gallon of fiberglass and i can do the same thing for you. for custom installs this place is the last place i'd go too which is sad as there's alot of bad places around here. don't pay a shop to screw your car up like i did. if you need simple suggestions let me know, i've been to almost every shop in the area trying to get done what i've done.

depending on what you need, i can do most of it. I don't have to tools to build boxes anymore but as far as install and wiring, i'll help you out.

i like metal also and hairbands from the 80s i had alpine receiver jbl 6x9s 3ways in the back and kenwood 6x9 3ways in the door i had 2 12 volfenhag subs in a vented box and a underpowerd power acoustic 420 watt 2 channel amp that only ran the subs i had it set on full so the subs played music thru them not just bass all in a full size dodge van and it rocked better then most top dollar systems ive heard i would try some different speakers other then the rockfords i never cared for those to much maybe add some mids in the pillars try cartunes on woodward and 11mile rd

Send me a PM.

I design/build/install custom MDF sub boxes. I actually do it the right way using the parameters of the speaker to drive the size and type of box. For a solid sounding stereo for rock music I would suggest component drivers in the front doors, standard 3-way coaxials in the rear doors, and a sealed box with 2 10" subs. For the best results, a decent class-D amp for the subs, and a 4-channel amp for the door speakers. Pretty much any head unit with F/R/S line-level outputs will work.

x2 Simon is my cousin. If you go there tell him Brian Koury sent you. Hopefully he can help you out. :)

He also owns stores on Woodward and Telegraph if those are closer, but he usually works out of the Gratiot location.

Okay, since it was brought up more than once...

When I mentioned the place that did some minor work for me in the past, it was Simon's shop. His buddy Tom Frederick is one of my good friends. Tom's wife is best friends with my wife. So, I know Simon, maybe better than most guys off the street. I want to move into his house in the worst way. :)

Now please don't get me wrong, I obviously have zero problems with him, his shop and absolutely the utmost confidence in his work. I pretty much planned on going there anyway as my "old standby" if I got nowhere with my thread here.

Truthfully, I had planned on going there from the start but I wanted to make this post to see if there was anything else out there that I didn't know about. You know, kinda see what else was out there just for peace of mind. Plus I also wanted to see if I could give the opportunity to someone here as a side job, but I still wanted to convey that I wanted professional grade work while staying within a budget. Heck, who doesn't? ;)

So , thanks for the info and thoughts. Keep them coming, just so I know what the word on the street is.

unfortunately with stereo shops if you find a shop that treats you decent your pretty lucky... so many are shops trying to make a quick buck with overworked kids out of highschool it isn't right.

several places i went too i found they even try to sell their installers off as older people and when you show up for your scheduled time it will be a kid fresh out of school that is being taught.

just weigh your options, look around a bit and read up on the equipment your into. you'll be fine, if your not doing a major reconstruction there shouldn't be any worries.
