about 10 years ago I was pulled over on my way home from work from a state police, got me out the car to do a search which they tell me they found another VIN number in the car I am highly aware that this type of vehicle is stolen a lot but when I purchased the car I looked at all the VIN numbers and made sure everything matched 100%. when they told me they found another VIN on the car I was shocked and asks to show me but they refused that was the last day I have seen my car I don't know whatever happened to it where it is or if it did go back to the original owner I still have the title to the car and it's actually still in my name for some reason. I know I should have done something then when it happened but I didn't I just don't know why so yes it is my fault but every day it always leaves me wondering what ever happened to that car. I actually wonder where it is or who has it or if its local or if the event was changed over I don't know but would like to ask someone for honest advice or maybe even a lawyer about this even though it's been a while ago. I don't know if they can find out the info of what happens to the car by running the VIN number that's on my title, my guess is it was stamped with a new VIN number but I think it should be in history of the vehicle and law enforcement or Secretary of State should be able to know these things. just would like to know some of your guys opinions on this if I should go forward with this or just let it go even though I have for the past 10 years which I feel dumb about it but it kills me still to this day that my car is gone. Oh and it was an 87 grand national so yea I get the theft thing well.

Probably too late to do anything about it now, legally, as most Michigan criminal statues of limitations are set at 5 years. I know new vehicles do have VIN numbers stamped on them in other areas other than the main VIN tag, but I don't know about back in the 80s. Probably so. I can't believe you didn't investigate this back then? What did you do, just walk home and start shopping for a new car? I would've said sorry officer you ain't leaving with shit until you prove this car isn't mine, and or is stolen.

I know man I do t know what the hell I was thinkin of. I figured they would scrap the VIN tag that was on the vehicle and place a new one on the door jam like they do when a vehicle has been retaged

I too must agree, it simply has been too long to most likely
be able to find out much. Of course you can always try.

Start with the police department that impounded your car.
Then check the towing company that towed your car.
Check with the State of Michigan DMV for a history report.
Check with grand national car clubs for any clues.

My guess is the car ended up being auctioned off by the
police department or the towing company - that is how
it normally works. A very slight chance the insurance
company took it back.

Speaking of insurance, what happened with your insurance?

My brother had a 1985 cutlass stolen from him and they re tagged it. The car was found on the east side around 7 and mound at a drug house when the state boys raided it, they cut the floor open by the passenger door post to find the original numbers. He now has the car back with a sticker in the door post. Odds are the original owner got it back thats why you never heard a thing about it.

It is possible that the original owner got the grand national back.
But it sounds like this car was missing for a bit of time. The insurance
company would have paid the claim off in that case, if the original
owner had insurance.

i agree, my brothers car was gone for 4 years and it wasnt fully insured so its a little more cut and dry.

holy cow.. punctuation would help immensely!
I'm confused. You got pulled over, your car disappeared and you never thought to question it until 10 years later?

In which case the insurance company would send the car to auction.

My uncle had a 67 mustang stolen in the late 70s. Had the title in the glove box, he never tried to find it.
