Anyone else thinking about taking a buyout?

If you like the job and the security, I would stay. You'll probably never find a job with better benefits. If you don't like it, then take the education buyout and go into something you want to do for the rest of your working life.

Job security does not exist in the automotive industry.

I would stay depending on what line you're working. How many years until you can retire?

The only way the UAW is going to lose lifetime employment is if the Big 3 start going out of business. I just don't see that happening.

I think there are good points to both. The most important to consider is how will you cover your expenses with 50% of your current salary for four years? If you have that covered and are motivated I'd take the school option.

The other side, you get 70k roughly as you said and its pretty much sink or swim.

Ford is going to break the union thats the only reason they brought in the Boeing Guy he did it there he will do it there. The Uaw realizes therie days are numbered, why do you think They got the dealers from the Casinos to go with them?? They have already agreed to only 1/3 of the replacing workies for the Line jobs have to be union.

btw, i am hourly.
I worked there for seven years. My hire date was in june if 98, I worked in the rouge plant. My cousin who hired in june of 95 was transfered from dearborn to the NEW mustang plant, He was told by a very close friend that is A V/P at HQ TO TAKE THE BUY OUT!!!!! He was told that anyone with less than 15 years and a record will be gone in the next (2) years or so. They want to get rid of anyone they can,so they can HIRE new help for a lot less money. After sept 11 I went from making 100k to about 60k. Thats how much over time they cut. Im not trying to say they are going to fire you, Im just telling you what my cosuin told me over dinner laast week. I guess most people are looking at it like this, " If we don't take it and stay and get let go, what do we have??? If we take it and leave Atleast I have a way to pay my bills" I think thats the way ford wants us to see it,this way most of the guys will go. Good luck to you,im sure whatever you do will work out for you. Hard to grasp that we went from years of 6 digit incomes, to worring about having a job next week. Good old state of mich!!!!

I have 12 years and they are offering 100k. After all the deductions probably end up with 70K.
$67,500
I'm sticking it out and transferring, because I do not want to go back to school. But, I'm taking classes on the side while working through the etap program.

That is what we have heard also.

Rumors are the same for salary, if you are offered something take it.

a buddy I deployed with in my squadron took the buy-out recently. He's working full time on base now making money and benefits w/ his buyout money in savings.

I would take the education buy out. You can still work while you go to school. 12 credits is easy enough to still work while taking. You will end up with a degree in the end, hopefully something you can use in this state!

how much are voc. schools a semester? If it isn't $7500+/semester, seems the educational buyout would be a waste. You don't get $15,000/year if you're going to macomb community college or something. Tuition isn't that steep so you wouldn't get all of it. Only what it'll cost you, so you'd have to go to a university or something to make it worth it.

take the $100,000 and run.

I was going to take the educational buyout, but I figured I could go to school and stay at Ford for free. Until they go bankrupt, anyway.

Not trying to be an ass here, but since when is it call FORDS?????? Last time I looked at all the ovals on my buildings it only said FORD
