Despite Google’s efforts to introduce stricter quality controls, the number amount of malicious activity on the operating system rose by nearly 500% in the last quarter.

A new report from security firm Trend Micro has revealed that Android users are more at risk than ever from malicious activity within the operating system. The amount of adware classed as malicious or designed to steal user information rose by a massive 483% in the last quarter.

The news will be a blow to Android users, especially after Google took steps to combat the issues on its operating system by introducing stricter developer policies. Despite these measures, however, the amount of activity conducted by malicious apps in the Google Play store has actually risen since then.

The new policies included stricter controls on naming apps, and banned apps from collecting personal information with users’ permission first. The Trend Micro report revealed that this move has made little difference, with many copycat apps and suspicious practices still rife in the Google Play Store.

They come out with these reports every quarter. it was supposedly up 400% at the end of last year. Another 500% this year. I'm pretty sure every app on the market must be malware at the rate they keep reporting this. I'm not worried about it and neither should most people. If you go rip off a paid software and get malware, you deserve it. Same with Windows computers. People load the P2P software then bitch that they get viruses.

I was reading an article earlier today on this written by some guy who was obviously an Apple slappy and his defining point of why Apple was better at keeping Malmare at a minimum was because 95% of Apple owners don't upgrade their devices until they die. Either Apple products die every 1 to 2 years or he's talking out of his ass. I'm going with option 2.

What? Link? Sounds absurd

It's all a matter of perspective.

For instance if TM found one app to be malware last year, then an increase of 400% would yeald 5 apps. Now that same 5 apps from the previous year increased by 500%, now android has crazy 30 apps out it's millions that are malware.

Knowing actual figures instead of these crazy percentages goes a long ways.
