Anybody done one? My cousin just bought a 65 with 6 banger and 3 on the floor and wants to convert to 89-93 5.0 foxbody stuff including AOD trans. Not looking for big power, just a fun, relatively inexpensive cruiser. Anybody got what he needs...engine, trans and crossmember, harnesses? Does he need a new drivsehaft and rear end too? He is a trained mechanic and makes his living as a body shop lead tech/foreman and has done this kind of stuff before so I know he is up to the task. Just trying to help him with parts etc. I know it's probably all over the internet but wondering if any of yous have done this and might possibly have the parts he needs as well. Thanks in advance.

Well, the 6 cylinder cars had 4 lug hubs and pretty weak springs, so those need to be changed as well. There are quite a few differences between the 6 and 8 cars...

Watch which intake he goes with. The stock 5.0L is too wide for the export (shock tower) brace. Those cars really need that brace.

The 5.0 is a direct fit. The AOD crossmember can be had for pretty cheap. Try National Parts Depot in Canton. Mustang Steve.com has a great brake swap kit for the 5 lug hubs. It uses the 2005+ S197 calipers and rotors which is huge stopping power for the 1st gen Mustangs.

The driveshaft will most likely need to be upgraded as well as the rear end.

As Grr said, the 6 cyl cars have a lot of different parts so start looking into replacement parts for the 8 cyl if he is going to do any freshening up of the car.

What a great project! I'd love one myself. You guys should make a build thread
on this project.

This is a conversion that is very popular & has been done many times,
so there is tons of great info / build threads on it.

Keep us posted.

I have a '66 with a 302 (carb) and a AOD trans.
A friend has the same but with a 347 and twin turbo's. Actually, he just swapped out for a 6 speed manual trans.

I have a new front disc brake kit. It uses stock drum brake spindles for use with newer style Mustang brackets and calipers. It has new rotors, bearings and seals. Includes caliper brackets and used calipers, which I would replace. I also have 650# front springs, large front sway bar and brand new front valance. And, finally, I have a brand new SSBC rear disc brake kit for either an 8" or 9" small bearing rear end...

Have a bone stock 86 engine/trans/harness setup that will be taken out of my car pretty soon if interested. No race engine, but is unmolested.

I built a 65 Mustang and a 65 falcon with this combination when I worked at total Performance makes for a nice driver with good power, Call me when you get a chance and will go over the details !
