with the key in the on position you should get power to the points, when the points close you get power to the coil and when they open power is off at the coil. If you get no power to the points with the key on you have a bad ign switch or wire or ballast resistor(white block). you can run a jumper wire from the battery to the hot wire coming out of the distributor and turn the car over, you should get spark because you now have constant power to the points(do not leave it like this for more than just a test) no spark at this point means the points or coil are bad
