289 spark issue

with the key in the on position you should get power to the points, when the points close you get power to the coil and when they open power is off at the coil. If you get no power to the points with the key on you have a bad ign switch or wire or ballast resistor(white block). you can run a jumper wire from the battery to the hot wire coming out of the distributor and turn the car over, you should get spark because you now have constant power to the points(do not leave it like this for more than just a test) no spark at this point means the points or coil are bad

(disclaimer: this is to the best of my knowledge but I could be wrong)

points ground the coil, power is provided to the + side of the coil, points make or break the ground side

Well i put the electronic points thing back in and its getting spark but still no start. It sounds like its trying to start but nothing. One of my friends said timing may have jumped? To test that, you have to put the #1 cylinder at tdc and then see if the rotor is pointing at the #1 spot on the distributor cap?

yea, i checked a bunch of times. It also backfires through the carb.

sounds like you might be 180* off with the timing, put cyl 1 at tdc and the rotor should point to 1 right now. try lifting the dis and turning it 180 degrees so the rotor will again point to 1. or the timing jumped and you need to pull the timing cover

passenger side farthest from firewall. Come to find out i am off timing. =[
Its 650 for parts and labor to fix the chain. Is it worth it or should i just get another motor, mine uses oil and the gas mixes with the oil in the pan.
