so my mom just got a 2014 edge right before xmas , she got it new with like 20ish miles on it , it has the 3.5 liter v6 , she normally gets around 26ish miles per gallon ....... fast forward to this Monday and she calls me scared because her truck went from having 160miles to E down to 150miles to E in 2 blocks ( regular neighborhood blocks ) and she said at one point it said 0 miles to E . she tells me she wants me to drive it to see if its just her or actually something wrong with it , I jump in it and we start driving it and sure as shit its down from 150 to 145 in about 1 block , and by the time we get to the ford dealer on telegraph in taylor ( about 2-3 actual miles away from her house ) were down to 120ish miles to E , and im driving it like a grandma because at this point its starting to spit and sputter and do a stumble upon acceleration , no fuel leaks anyware , no smell of fuel .... dealer gives it back to her today and of course they say nothing was wrong with it and she tells me that its doing the same thing

thoughts . ideas ?

my 1st thought was a leak but without seeing a puddle or smelling it im not sure
my 2nd thought was bad gas but with the crazy drop in gas mileage and the spitting and sputtering wouldn't there be a CEL ?

Sounds like a misfire..........plugs and/or coils. Better be careful driving with a misfire........very easy to damage the cats.

My fiance has had a similar problem with her 1.6L Ecoboost escape. Sputters, spits, even died a few times. Of course if it isn't doing it at the dealer, there is no way to diagnose it.

all the dealer would have had to do was test drive it and see my mpg drop right before your eyes lol or do they not test drive and just let the computers do the work now ? .,. when I drove her car on Monday the MPG said she was averaging 6mpg

Cold weather is hard on fuel economy.
I usually get about 28 (December) until it gets this cold, right now I'm at 19.
Bad gas doesn't necessarily set a OBD fault either.

dealer said nothing was wrong , im sure my mom didn't ask if there were any either

if there was a few spits and sputters and sputtering upon acceleration for the 3 miles we drove a code wouldn't have popped up ?

You would have a misfire code if that was the case, and your CEL would be on or flashing.

Maybe with cold weather it was dumping fuel and fouled the O2?? Does she drive it more than short distances. Record shows..I'm not a mechanic... :)

When the dealer doesnt believe you, time to floor it with a brick. I know a girl who NEVER drove her Escape because it "has a bad cat converter"... dealer kept it for months upon months and let her drive a zero mile, loaded Explorer instead of her Escape.... hard to have faith in a dealer when I seen her deal with that.

sounds like the Fuel pump driver module is taking a shit, did the problem only occur when it was dumb ass cold out? or is it doing it now? If its doing it now ask the dealer to Put a VDR in the car, Then when the problem occurs your mom/you can hit the button to record whats going on

Did the vehicle receive a tank of E85? Conduct a fuel analysis test and determine the quality of fuel currently in the tank before refueling. Does the vehicle go to the same gas station for each fill-up?

No code will pop up from sputtering on bad fuel

This is a good thought!
How many tank of fuel has it been occurring?

Sounds like a few things... first off with the 3.5TT is spark plug gap. Ford had some issues initially and plug gap was at fault (too large)

Secondly, the Miles To Empty is an *Estimate* My truck will get progressively less accurate when the tank gets closer to empty (like losing 5 miles for every 1-2 that I drive) Its pretty normal. Yours sounds a bit extreme. Have you tried to fill it up to see if the display is somewhat accurate?

If its dumping that much fuel there should be a fault code. They can run the scan tool and check long term versus the short term fuel trims and see if its dumping fuel.

Next, the Ecoboosts have a "happy window" for fuel economy. Too heavy on the throttle and those little turbos spool and suck the fuel down. Being too light or idling for long periods will cause sluggish issues/smoke from accumulated HCs on the catalyst.

6Mpg is very low but Im willing to be that you might have gotten a bad batch of fuel.
