Bama to open two years in a row??? yikes
Win or lose, those game will tell us where we are (or will be).
Is a rule changing for 2016? Nebraska has 13 games scheduled too.
I noticed that Michigan is no longer playing Arkansas in 2015/16.
As the SEC tries to dominate every waking moment of media coverage this week, Brian Fremeau from Football Outsiders takes a look at the top six teams who could put us out of our misery and break the southerners' seven-year stranglehold on the national title.
He did this using a formula called Program FEI rating, a calculation based on five years' worth of data that I'll probably have to call John Urschel to understand but which can be found here.
Anyway, it's not much of a surprise to see Oregon at No. 1 on the list, followed by No. 2 Ohio State. But scroll down and you'll find a somewhat stunning entry at No. 6: Michigan State.
Fremeau writes that the Spartans' schedule, which avoids Ohio State and Wisconsin and sees Michigan come to East Lansing, is a big check mark in their favor. He says the FEI projections give Michigan State a 56 percent chance of winning at least two of its three road trips to Notre Dame, Northwestern and Nebraska. (I'm assuming that FEI is like Sex Panther Cologne in that 60 percent of the time, it works every time).
"Michigan State has to improve offensively in order to make a run, but extraordinary improvement may not be necessary," Fremeau writes. "The Spartans posted back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2010 and 2011 with pedestrian offensive efficiency metrics, ranking outside the top 40 in both years in avoiding three-and-outs. Mark Dantonio's defenses have been excellent, and should continue to be this fall."
I've written that I expect the Spartans to improve upon last year's 6-6 record, when they got a whole bunch of bad breaks and played a tough schedule. But improvement to national title level? I can't get on board with that. Not when Dantonio has so many question marks at quarterback, running back, wide receiver and even the offensive line. Yes, the Spartans' defense has been elite of late, and I think it will once again be the best in the Big Ten. But that offense is going to cost the team a game or two, and those road trips to Notre Dame and Nebraska in particular are daunting.
In fact, I think Michigan and Nebraska, both of whom get similar breaks in their schedules, are much better bets to make a surprise national title run than Michigan State. Any Spartans fans out there agree with Fremeau's assessment?
OSU has indefinitely suspended their Running Back after being implicated in a police report. My understanding is that Meyer's definition of indefinitely mean till halftime of the first full pad practice game.

Only a person of interest right now. They also suspended 3 others for various infractions. Still a two horse race between OSU and Wisconsin.
Columbus nightclub video footage appears to clear Ohio State running back Carlos Hyde of allegedly hitting a woman, Yahoo! Sports is reporting.
Footage from the Sugar Bar 2 shows that Hyde, who was suspended from the team indefinitely Monday by coach Urban Meyer after being named a person of interest in the investigation, did not touch the alleged victim during the incident early Saturday morning. Charges are not expected to be filed, according to the report.
The video reportedly shows the alleged victim punching Hyde in the head after he had been speaking in her direction. He then reached back in her direction but never appeared to make contact.

A reporter for NBC 4 in Columbus, Ohio, was allowed to watch a surveillance video of the Sugar Bar 2 incident and her retelling of it contradicts a Yahoo! Sports report from a day earlier.
NBC 4’s Mindy Drayer said she was asked to view the video to help clear up the rumors circulating about the incident. She said she watched it three of four times and concluded that Hyde did make contact with the woman.
“He turns to leave and go back down to his buddies and that’s when she takes a swing at him,” Drayer said. “Watching the surveillance video—again, I’ve watched it a couple of times—I absolutely could not tell whether she made contact with him. He obviously did not like the fact of her even taking a swing at him.
“So instead of walking back down with his buddies, he did turn toward her and did move to slap or hit her in the face. He did make contact with her. Again, it was not a punch. As far as what I could tell in the surveillance video she was not knocked unconscious. He did make contact with his hand on her face, according to the surveillance video that I watched.”
The report also stated that charges are not expected to be filed against Hyde.
