2006 F150 ISSUES!! Sounds like bent valves.

Well that was fun. Just got the lh valve cover pulled. Oh yes 5w-20 mobile 1 in there. There is metal dust or flakes all over #3 the 2nd cylinder from the front. I am not sure what to look for at this point. It seems to run fine for the 1st 20 minutes or so. Then it feels like it is running on 1/2 the motor. shakes at idle. I got a few engine misfire codes and a #3 misfire at that point. Do I throw the coils in and start it with the valve cover off? What is the next step here?

damn you got some major issue, Not sure if I remember being told that on those motors the cam has no bearing where it is bolted in the cradle, its just got oil passages that over time plug up and starve the cam holders of oil. Causing metal on metal. It was a long time ago I heard that but I am not 100% if it is correct, perhaps someone else can chime in.

did some googleing and found this post in regards to an issue similar to yours:

By scoring of the cam do they mean on the cam journals? or on the end of the cam where the phaser is? If it is scoring of the cam journal ford will not admit there is a problem because usually the problem is due to a aftermarket filter that was installed and peices have come apart of that filter internally which has plugged part of the VCT system causing low oil pressure to the phasers causing them to make the noise, OR lack of maintenance.. going way over your oil change interval causing the oil filter to literally fall apart from being on so long. This debris can also cause lack of lubrication to the cam journals which in turn causes the scoring. We have actually found chunks of orange material that has come from filters in the VCT systems and some filter of the paper element plugging ports.

Hmm. I used a fram toughgaurd and mobil 1. I would guess about 3500 miles on the motor since It was changed over. interesting though. the cam lobes feel smooth I do not feel any scoring or scratches.

I don't know how relevant that video is. Seems like he is trying to bash fram. They have to be better then the 24.99 jiffy lube filters! I am not exactly sure that it is metal in there. It is gritty but non magnetic and black not shiny.

I agree with what most on this thread have said. These engines are junk; especially the valve train. I have a friend at work with one who is on his second set of cams in 200K. At least the bottom end has stayed together!

All that stuff on the cam looks like dirt/sand from on top of the valve over before you pulled it. You can run it with the cover off but it will make a nice mess of oil and smoke like nuts.

I figured these may help. I was reading about livernois cam phaser lockouts. I am thinking that if I can pervent the motor from moving the phasers it might run just fine. I just want it to run and not feel like the motor is going to explode!!

All of the metal is from the spark plug hole it looks like. all that grit sits in the "saddle" of the V/C gasket, once you remoce the cover it falls onto the cam.

on a side note, spray the other side down with carb cleaner or brake clean then blow gun it off. blow out the plug holes and then disassemble.

have you make any further progress on diag?

Nothing!! I got a bunch of vct related codes. 10 20 340 345 349. I ran it yesterday till it got warm. It runs fine until it is completly warmed up. Then it all goes to hell. It has to be something with the vct controls or the vct's themselves. I really just want to sell this motor and get a 2004-2008 motor. I have a feeling it might be just be incompatable with a 2006 system?

Well just an update on my motor from hell. I spoke with suburban ford and they suggested I check a tsb on the VCT solenoids. It sounded good but he cautioned to pulled the cam caps and check for scoring. Anyways he wanted $90 to just check the solenoids. Parts for the solenoids was $102 so I just went ahead and replaced them. It did nothing but my cam caps looked scored up to hell pics below. I think I need a Headjob? or maybe just a motor. I so hate the 5.4 3v motors!!

I feel bad for me too. I have to drive my express 3500 cargo back and forth to work. It gets about 9 miles to the gallon.

Definaly sounds like an oil pressure problem to the pashers when its warm. Since your that far, pull the cam and check the lifters and followers. You probably have a few followers torn up. Check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge at warm idle.

Those 5.4 lires were notorious for no oil to the drivers head. Ford replaces the motor. Some guys on f150online.com change the phasers, followers, lifers and put a timing kit on it. and it solves all those issues. I would definatly check that web site out, some guys have posed videos of worse running motors than yours and they do those parts i listed, and they sound like brand new again.

If needed. Im pretty good with the 5.4 motor so pm me if you need me to look at it. Im in Westland and always willing to help a MM out. Or ill trade you an 01 jeep cherokee sport for your fucked running truck! :)

I have looked a little but I will look some more today. I might just take you up on taking a look at it. The dealer will just want to replace the motor. They don't fix heads! As tempting as a jeep is the Cherokee is a bit to small for me.
