2002 Ford Explorer Dash help

You should be able to just pull the IP and replace the bulbs. They should be a simple twist lock on the back. No need to open up the IP.

This is correct. A few of the Fords with the digital readout odometer that goes blank will not be repaired by a light bulb though, that's an internal problem(hopefully that's not the problem you have). The illumination bulbs are all still standard #194 bulbs in a twist lock socket.

I have the digi odo but that's working fine. My issues isn't the back lighting its the dummy lights. I've had an airbag light on for 2 years and myself, mechanics, and dealers can't figure it out. It's driving me f'n nuts. I understand it won't go off in a wreck. Im just sick of staring at it!!!! :banghead:

What code did you find stored in the restaint control module?

As a side note, if you remove the bulb the RCM will detect an open in the circuit and sound an audible "beeping" tone constantly to warn of an airbag problem... The light is probably the lesser evil, but I'd rather just fix the real problem IMO.

The seat belt "beeper"? 'cause I disconnected the wire for that years ago.

I truthfully don't remember the airbag code. Brian (broken) and I scanned the car this winter. I don't remember the number but he said if I was in an accidence that it wouldn't blow the 'bags (oh darn! )

Just thought of this.... Why would it sound now if it wasn't before? I mean the light is on and the bags won't go off in an accident.

No, it's not the seat belt beeper. There is an internal piezo beeper inside the restraint control module. It only goes off if the bulb is burned out/removed just to warn of an airbag system problem(because the warning light cannot in such a senario). Just a redundant safety system.

If you can get the code I can probably offer some kind of help, I work on airbag systems most everyday at a Ford dealership and see many of the common problems.
