1995 Mustang V6 3.8L possible head gasket failure

I will be working on a 95 mustang soon and it has been reported to have an overheating problem. I am not jumping to conclusions to say this is problem right away, I will inspect all other cooling system components first. I want to get as much info on this common problem as I can.

I have read in multiple mustang forums about using a 96+ or a 99+ 3.8L Head gasket set, as they are superior to the 94-95 Head gaskets. Also read that using a copper gasket spray on both sides also helps seal the head to the block.

Does anyone know anything else about this? I want to be able to do the job one time the best possible way with the best combination of parts.
Thanks.

Did you ever find what the problem was? I see the head gaskets on the 3.8's deteriorate all the time. Be sure to use a razor blade and not a rotary scotchbrite "cookie pad" to clean the deck surfaces on block and heads. The graphite gasket material will peel right off and leave a slight residue behind- which won't hurt a thing. Less is more. I see too many people try to "shine" the surfaces up so they look good while rolling over the edges and ruining a flat surface. Check the heads with a straight edge and a feeler gauge. Or have them properly resurfaced. A little copper spray is ok - just not too much. maybe hang the gasket and spray 2 thin layers. And don't forget to use new head bolts as those should be "torque to yeild", meaning they are only good for one clamping.

new head gaskets , copper spray and get some new hear bolts , ive done quite a few head gaskets on the 3.8s and never had a failure
