It will depend on the grinder, there are so many different manufacturers and process out there. What do you have?
My 6", 3/4 hp bench grinder had a wire wheel on it as well, but the wire wheel drags down when trying to remove pan gasket material, clean up threads on bolts and such. That is why I think I need Stu least a 1hp motor.
I'm guessing it to be a Harbor Freight special, no name on it. It's a 6", 3/4hp, 110v, single phase, 60Hrz, 3,450 rpm's.
Ideally, I would like something that has open wheels, with enough torque to do the job listed above.

Are you sure about your numbers? On the site, they only claim 1/5hp.
