WTB: Guitar

I've own a floating trem guitar and I love it. But if you use different strings you need to either set it up or have it done. Tuning them can also be a hassle because each string directly changes the rest of them. I'm not saying they don't have their place (I heard that Eddie Van Halen guy likes them). I just don't think they are really beginner guitars.

hence the tremlocker- it replaces a spring with a solid rod and no more floating trem. Want the trem back.....pop the rod off

You're missing my point. Why get a floating trem guitar just to block it? Save the trouble and buy a hard tail.

x2, especially for a newer guitar player. All the types of trems and other crap isn't important until the guitar player can really play.

One advantage would be the locking nut that is useful on a cheaper guitar so it stays in tune. Another would be the fine tuners on the bridge. Imn not saying its the best way to go but hes looking at used guitars so the selection isnt the same as guitar center- I was just making a suggestion to not overlook a used guitar because of the floyd. My main guitar is a hardtail so im not pro-floyd..... But I also remember how fun it is to keep a guitar in the sub-$400 range in tune with cheap tuners.

Now lets find the kid a beater axe

My Ibanez has a floating floyd, and I hate tunning it LOL. But it stays is tune FOREVER, well until I beat the crap out of the trem bar. But I agree locking nut is awesome. Hope the guy gets a nice guitar.

My son plays an Ibanez Mikro 90% of the time. He is 8 and the strength in his fingers is growing so he will want to play a full size guitar all the time soon as he grows and the strength increases. He also has a Fender Squire student guitar, but loves to play the Jackson most. I would like to keep that a special guitar and find something more everyday for him. I am not in a hurry, just looking for a great guitar at a great price. I appreciate the feedback and I will keep it in mind as I keep looking. When it happens it happens :)

Gene- if you decide to look at new guitars, check out the js line Jacksons. They're right around 200 bucks but have better features than equally priced ibanez and epiphones - such as real wood bodies (opposed to plywood), made in japan by jackson (not farmed out to random guitar factories in korea), and a decent neck. Im a Ibanez guy all the way but youve gotta spend big money ( 1000 + ) to get a good ibanez or epiphone. I would say the squiers are probably the next best bang for the buck.

I don't know what Epiphones you're looking at but the Customs (which are "real wood") start at about $600 new and they are the top o' the line unless you get into the Elitist line.

In all reality you should be looking at MIM Fenders. You can pick up nice ones for $250 and they have nice necks and sound good.
