Would you sell someone a classic car knowing that they were going to hack it up?

I took a peice of shit 81 notch and turned it into an 87-93 lookalike, and put a 2001 GT drivetrain in it. 99% of people loved the car. The other 1% couldn't believe I hacked the car up. Who cares, I saved this car from getting crushed. At least it's still a Mustang.

People called me a hack...hence the name of the project!!

It may be silly, but I think cars have a soul. They may not be a living being, but they all have a life, a personality and a soul. I couldn't sell the car knowing that. There are enough '70-'72 LeMans sitting in the salvage yards already for parts, as well as aftermarket suppliers. Why kill a nice car?

1000% Agree

You saved a car. Cutting a car in half is destroying it. I had a '69 Plymouth Valiant with a slant six. It was an old ladies car and she gave it to her 16 year old grandson with 30,000 miles on it. He tore the car up. When I bought it, the front was smashed, the dash has been cut up for a POS radio.

I repaired the dash and found an AM-FM thumbwheel radio for it and repaired the front end. I bought a set of 14" rally wheels, new trim rings and caps and set of Polyglas GT RWL tires. It wasn't fast, but it looked good. I put another 60K on it, and smash the front end myself (also repaired).

I sold it two years after buying it for twice what I paid for it ($2500). I know the guy I sold it to took care of it, but he sold it and I lost track of the car...

Until about 10 years ago. I saw the car in Sterling Heights down the street from my house. Poor car. The paint was fading, the rockers were rusting, the dash was cut up again for another POS radio, the car was jacked up with shackles in the back, and the rallys were painted in a dark blue in a misguided attempt to contrast with the light blue of the car. They also put tape pinstripes that were dark red.

I wanted to cry. I wanted to buy the car back but I wasn't sure what house he stopped at and I never saw the guy leaving. Even thinking about that car depresses me :(.

Yeah, there was a car I that I owned for a short period of time, but kept up on it. Beautiful car, Florida car actually. Only in MI, for 5,000 miles. It was a 92 white GT with an Alternative banner on it. I sold it to a 16 year old kid and about a year later I saw it sitting outside a collision shop. He ras going 60MPH in the rain and lost it into a tree. It was fucked up. I heard the insurance totalled it, but he had money saved and paid out of pocket to have it fixed. That sucked seeing it all mangled.

nope... I would pass.

When I sold my Lightning the owner said he was going to take care of it. It was my pride and joy. 2 weeks later I went over to his house to drop off some slicks and other parts and it was parked on the street, covered in leaves and looks like he never washed it. I was literally sick to my stomach and pissed.

I swore never to do that again.

I had a friend who sold his pride and joy 5.0 and 2 weeks later the kid who's parents bought the car... wrapped it around a tree. He was pissed@

If its a pride and joy car, then i understand. But if its not, and its just a "nice car" you own, then i say sell it.

To a car guy, cars are like family members. You hate to see one abused. Even project cars can tug at you like that.

I wish I had my Fathers 71 Like yours, it had a 350 4 Barrel and it was Quick and fun to drive, a real classic that should of remained in my family.

I would hold on to that car you have or one day in the future you will wish you had it back and regret getting rid of it.

If you have a job and no "Real" need to sell it then keep it!

Its times like this that im glad to know im not alone. I have sold a few cars in the past the people trashed them or cut them up, after that i said i would never sell another to someone knowing the were going to harm the car.

i also belive that cars have a soul kinda of like "Ghost in the machine" type thing.

Yes. Money is money. You had your good times in it. You have your pictures and videos. If someone wants to buy it and I'm selling it, then they can drive it off a cliff if they pay what I'm asking.

Fuck yeah I would. I'd be one crazy hypocrite if I wouldn't sell someone a car becasue they were going to cut it up. I would have been pissed if the guy I bought my car from would have not sold it to me knowing I was going to cut out the shock towers and drop in a mod motor. (bought it on ebay so there was no price haggling gonig on)

I am a member on both forums Jensen, and you know me, I have a hard time parting with cars. Hell, I still have the same Volvo wagon I said I'd sell when you lived across the street.

This is not a hidden for sale post, just getting some opinions as I posted it on a few forums just to see what people think, not some bum for sale line. I turned a guy down last year for the same reason [going to use it for a GTO], and it isn't even posted for sale on this site.

Kind of reminds me when i sold my 87 Iroc to a 16 year old kid. I went through all of the motions making the car right. It had a custom pearl paintjob on it that looked like a million bucks. Well the kid said he had an Omni to drive to school. I said good because if something happens to this paint it'll be a bitch to match it and make it look right again.

Well he took it to school and some jealous kid keyed the whole side of it. Made me want to cry :(

OHHH HI DAN! :)

OK I take back my previous staetment :0 I was just was over there and it was the top post on both sites.....looked fishy! :)

I vouch for the owner!

My dad will be selling his '86 GN that he watched get built. He doesn't want some trickledick buying it and negating all of the blood, sweat, and tears he put into it all of these years, because it would kill him, regardless of how much money is thrown in his face.

He wants to make sure the car will be respected and owned by someone who he knows would legitimately take care of it.

It must be quite a dilemma- wanting to sell something, but must meet certain criteria blah blah.

Dan, tell your dad I'll give him $10K for it. I always wanted to Pro-Street one. I might even put in a BBC. Maybe cut a hole in the hood for a blower and a mailbox scoope. Of course I'd rip out the stock interior and put aluminum panels in it to give it a race car look. Tubs and a rear clip. Can't wait! Ask him when we can get together...
