Would you fix it?

seeing as the car is only 5-6 years old and assuming everything else works ( i know caddy has some extra electronics that like to crap out) I would do the $750 trans mentioned above and roll around til something else breaks.

Hell, even if you spent the 2-3k and kept the car its still worth it as opposed to buying another car. figure this: sell the car for 7k with a rebuilt trans so you are really only getting 4k for it.. thats not gonna buy you another caddy and def not gonna get you a car with less problems.

The car is at Somerset GMC. I went there yesterday and seen the pan, I'm not knowledgeable in transmissions but I seen the shavings. It looked like silver dust throughout the fluid that was in the pan, no 1" pieces or anything like that but it couldn't have been good.

I will not screw over anyone, its just not how I roll. I had some great help from the site in finding a VERY low mile transmission with a 1 year 15,000 mile warranty on parts and labor for a great price. In the end I should get my car back for under 3k. I know it is a higher mileage car, but I really like it and it has been good to me so far. For the money I spent I couldn't have bought another car, caddy or otherwise, without very high mileage and question the maintenance that has been done to it.

Again, thank you to everyone for their opinions and for all the help!!

I worked as a transmission mechanic for quite a while. If it was slipping it is fucked - no question. The "shavings in the pan" comment sounds a little strange though. Usually you will find some fine ground up debris in the pan but usually the shavings are always in the filter. And that is another thing. If you get your trans fluid changed be sure to change the filter and crack it open. Most filters have a filter material that is folded in half. That is where the big stuff always ends up. If you see brass you are screwed...

I have a 2007 Cadillac STS AWD with 145,000 on the clock. Took it into the dealer because of what seemed like a slipping transmission. They are telling me they pulled the pan and found a bunch of metal shavings. Worst case scenario is a new transmission which they say will cost me 4,500 installed. According to KBB the car in good condition is worth 7-8K, I figured I may be able to get 3K for it as is.
What would you do?
