Would you fix it?

I have a 2007 Cadillac STS AWD with 145,000 on the clock. Took it into the dealer because of what seemed like a slipping transmission. They are telling me they pulled the pan and found a bunch of metal shavings. Worst case scenario is a new transmission which they say will cost me 4,500 installed. According to KBB the car in good condition is worth 7-8K, I figured I may be able to get 3K for it as is.
What would you do?

call around and get price on a used trans. no sense in putting a brand spanking new trans behind a 145k mile motor.

According to them a used trans would save me about 1K. If they can rebuild mine the cost would be even less, I was just figuring on a worst case. Brand new out of the box would come with a 100k mile warranty. The motor (3.6) has been great for the 45K miles I have had the car. I have been keeping up with all the maint (new synthetic fluids & plugs).
I just hate to dump the car get another used car when I know the history of mine.

You could always go the Craigslist way.
Offer it up for 10k o.b.o. as is. Make sure you have theft insurance with enough of a payout to make a difference. If somone offers you 6k take it. If not, no love lost.

That motor is a very stout peice... Keep the car...

Off on the shelf ready to go. $750 + tax 30 day parts only warranty. I'm in Warren.

Yep, fuck a total stranger over, that's the best thing to do.

If I could get it done and on the road for less than about $2000 I'd get it fixed and keep it, especially since you've had it a while and maintained it well. I have an 02 Camry right now with 228,000 on it and its a great car. Been in the family since 14,000 miles so I really trust it because I know its been cared for right over the years. Any well maintained car that's of pretty good quality should go over 200,000 in my opinion. Or you could always get it fixed and then turn right around and sell it also for as much as you can get, selling it with the broken trans will be a waste, everyone will try to beat the shit out of your asking price.

145k and the trans is already shot? Damn, that's pretty disappointing.

I am always leery of trusting a dealer. Did you see the shavings in the pan? Was it the typical magnet catch or was it chunks of metal in there?

Was the fluid level low or was it full when they drained it? Did you get it back with topped off fluid and it's still slipping?

shit When I had the trans pan pulled on my 98 explorer at 190k miles there was alot of metal debris. Put it back together and it rolled 232k recently. Has slight shudder on uphill downshifts but not enough to make me replace anything.

Ask you're self this.... Can you replace the car for the cost of the trans?.... Fix the trans get another 100,000 miles?
