Damn. Anyone else been watching this project?

Pontiac, MI, January 14, 2008 -- The Wireless Oakland Project Team announced today that the implementation schedule for the remaining communities scheduled to receive "free" wireless Internet service will be delayed temporarily.

"A sagging Michigan economy coupled with investor fears due to problems with other major wireless projects around the country is making it difficult to secure the funding necessary to move forward with the project," said Deputy County Executive and CIO Phil Bertolini.

But Bertolini was also quick to point out that Wireless Oakland is completely different from the other projects encountering problems. For example, Bertolini notes that these other initiatives have relied primarily on an advertising revenue stream. Wireless Oakland, he says, has multiple revenue streams which provide a much more stable income for the private provider.

MichTel Communications LLC., the primary Wireless Oakland partner, is continuing to talk to private investors in order to obtain the funding required to complete the project. The company is very confident it will be successful in accomplishing this goal sometime early in 2008.

The Phase One development of the seven pilot communities has proven to be extremely successful. Phase One deployment has 19,000 users on the network who have used a combined total of more than 23 million minutes of "free" Internet service since March 2007.

"We have significant investor interest in the Wireless Oakland initiative but the negative experiences in other projects have shaken confidence in the potential investor pool," said Tony Yangouyian, CFO for MichTel Communications. "We are currently working very closely with investors that understand the wireless space and hope to have them signed up very soon."

In the meantime, Bertolini says the Wireless Oakland team will continue to prepare for future phases of the Wireless Oakland project.

"This is just another bump in the road that we will work hard to overcome," said Bertolini. "We believe this project will move forward."

The county's private sector partner will fund, own, operate and maintain the Wireless Oakland network and county tax dollars will not be used to subsidize or fund the effort. Free wireless Internet service will be offered at a lower bandwidth and the private sector partner will charge fees for additional services

I fucking hate these city and county projects to bring high speed wireless internet to DENSELY POPULATED areas that already have several land based providers available and don't NEED wireless. :pissed:

troy looked into wireless internet about 8+ years ago. I was told that the system they were looking at, 4 antennas would cover the entire city, @ a very low cost for install and hardware.
this new Oakland county system is up and running on big beaver road up to about rochester...looses signal between j-r & dequindre.
someplace in California has free wireless running through power lines-pilot program.
i agree, its a bitch to get a good connection unless your in a densely populated area.
i have been trying for 2 years to get comcast (or any other high speed cable internet carrier) for over two years now-and Im @ 8 mile and Groesbeck...I watched the comcast hook it up to the business across the street...to bring the line to me they wanted 4k at first...now they want 13k....ass wipes.

You are against communities working with service providers to lay certain infrastructure which attracts more business, and residents too?

Normally the only people against public WiFi are cable companies.

This solution is free to users (the basic package anyway). Even the packages you pay for are reasonably priced and give you the mobility you cannot have with land based providers.

That is what I love about my Sprint card :D

I live in Pontiac, and there is no WiFi signal in my neighborhood at all - and I do check occassionally with my laptop. Compared to most of the taxes I pay, I think I would at least get some benefit out of this one! I would love to tell comcast to shove it.

 I'm not really against them, I hope they build out every city so they can get started on rural areas finally!

I read that about a month ago. I had it at my old place and loved it. Here at my new place I have nothing. I miss bridging cable and the free wire less, it made for some nice speeds.
