Winter coats

Well it's getting to be that time of year again and I find myself without a coat. What coats do you guys use? How's the mobility in it? Any suggestions?

Dress: Peacoat
Lightweight/Outdoor: Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, First Ascent
Super cold: Mountain Hardwear Subzero Parka

Joes Army Navy has awesome wool pea coats for reasonable prices. That said, I always dress in layers in the winter. The Under Armour Cold Gear is a great first layer and can be found very cheap at Marshalls, I use both the compression pants and shirt for a first layer. For a second layer, usually long johns over the cold gear, then fleece for the 3rd insulating layer. After that, it's either jeans and a hoodie or Carharrt jacket.

definitely looking for something more casual, I have a peacoat but it doesn't usually fit with what I'm wearing.

as cold as last winter was at times, I think I only wore my carhartt jacket a handful of times. I havea carhartt vest I wear with a flannel shirt or hoodie, and I am usually comfortable. sometimes I'll go t shirt/thermal/flannel/vest. mobility is awesome, and you don't have to strip layers off when going inside and outside frequently. I usually keep ym big carhartt coat in the truck, if its gonna be unbearable cold, and if I put that over my vest, its super warm.

Northface Apex non-lined. From Fall to Spring, layer up if it' going to be colder. I can't stand a big coat.

This is a little out there, But stop at the salvation army. I'm always buying stuff and selling it on eBay. .

They have killer deals on stuff, a lot of times the stuff is almost brand new. I've bought new hockey jerseys for $4

I've bought full cashmere coats for $20. Literally said made in Italy for Macy's.

My "VAIL" Ski Instructor, Ski jacket.

Or one of the many Mt. Brighton Ski Instructor ski jackets I've collected since becoming an instructor in 1991. (they also double as a snowmobile jacket, ice fishing jacket, and anything outside in the cold weather jacket)

I think for the money a snowboarding jacket is pretty good. They are warm enough for a long period outside, tons of pockets and not really heavy or bulky because they are made for range of motion. Not to mention they are built to take a heck of a beating.

If I need to get a bit more dressed up, I have a Hollister coat that weighs like 15 pounds and its WARM, someone left it at my house like 5 years ago an we could never figure it out so its mine now.

I love my carhartt but they normally seem to run short and I get gusts of wind up my back and that's no fun.

No don't do this, mikes full of bad ideas

I've got 3 of these, warmest thing I've ever worn in the winter. North face has nothing on this. The Sherpa interior does the job, and surprisingly wind resistant. The last two, I think I paid $50/each for. Well worth the minor cost, and they clean up well. I live in mine during the winter, 30 to -20, it does the job.

Got my first one about 4 years ago for Christmas from relatives, because they found one in tall (I'm 6'7"), and since the wife has bought me two more, hooded, and non.
