Will a 28 inch tire slow me down?

The car is a 96 mustang full interior (automatic). It makes 530rwtq and 550rwhp and has a 3.55 gear . It spins pretty hard out of the hole with 315/35/17's. First gear is totally useless and once in second I can roll into it. I was hoping the taller tire on a 15 inch wheel would mellow it out when leaving and help the mph up top. Would this be the case or am I confused?

More traction seems to be needed...

My car was 7.2mph slower in the 1/4 with 28" tires vs 26". This was a powerglide 2 speed car. Max effort gearing is needed along with the perfect torque converter to make a powerglide car run good. I also dropped .25 seconds in ET with a 26" tire. Identical 60ft times too.

You might run a tenth or two quicker and lose 1mph.

Street or strip? Short answer: yes.

You have a traction problem and not a gearing problem. I play with this crap so follow me on this :)....... Calculate out the gear needed for the rpm desired when crossing the finish line. Say you have a 3.55, if you hit 130 mph through the traps you will be at 6000 rpm with the 26". With the 28" your trap rpm would be about 5500, or at 6000 you mph is 140.

Traction is finding the right tire and launch rpm. I'm assuming you have the MT drag radial. That won't hold your 550 torque on the street but at 18 lbs of pressure and a good burnout it should work pretty darn good at the track. Go to a 15" wheel and it will work even better.

If you are talking about "street use" them going to the 28" will help big time. If you stay with 17" wheel go with the M&H. 325/45-17. I have a pair on my SN95 on 10"wide wheels. Lidio runs them on his yellow car and they work!

that m&H 325 tire is nice had them on my Fox but they rubbed a little to much for my liking. They hooked pretty good on the street though and i'm putting down 500rwhp and no idea on torque but it was higher then my HP with my 351w. running the m&H 275/50/17 now they are one of the few companies that make a 28" tall tire for a 17" wheel. I really want to try another pair of 325's now that i have a 10" wheel instead of a 9" need to find a pair of toasted take offs :)

I have 550rwhp, 4R70w,3000 stall converter,410 gears,28in M&H racemasters. Its a joke on the street. Its starting to look like I need to take a trip to team z or find a place for some help.

Thanks everyone for your input. It looks like in short a 28" tire will help. Im due for some new tires anyways. I think I'm going to give those M&H tires a shot. The trans is a 4r70w with a tight converter around 2300rpm.
