Who can school me on electric dog fences?

Hey guys, I'm working on buying a house but it does not have a fence and that won't work well with my 50lb pitbull. Does anyone have any expertise about the electric fences that can be installed either in the ground or maybe one of the proximity ones?

Invisible Fence brand, comes with training and the shock is adjustable, guaranteed to work. I have one for my two 80lb Dobies with no issues for 10 years.

I have an Invisible Fence brand fence as well and am very happy with it. Works great for my 90 lb Lab. I've had it for about 6 years now.

Have had Invisible Fence here for 8 years here. Only issue I had was cutting the buried wires by accident. My bad.
The batteries for the collars are a bit pricey. One other drawback (relative to a conventional fence) is that other animals can walk right in.

Another Invisible Fence user here but it was already installed when we bought the house. I'm not sure that they have a DIY installation. I think that only they can install it. They do have a great system where they come out and train you (and your dog) on how to learn the lines. They come out a few times and adjust the level and sensitivity to your dog's needs as he/she learns the boundaries.

I got a PetSafe Wireless Instant Fence (NIB) $80. No wires to install, it does about 1/2 acre.

I have one too. I like it because you can unplug it and take it with you somewhere. It works on my 80lb lab, you just need to make sure the battery in the collar is charged when you put it on your dog. However, the system worked so well for my lab, that the battery has been dead for 2 months but if I put the collar on him, he doesn't even try to go beyond the boundary

how hard was it to put it in the ground?
They came out with a walk-behind machine and installed the wire. I just told them where I wanted it.
I think the wireless systems have come a long way. Unless you have a really large area to cover, I would look at the wireless systems.

Jaggirl made a good point: Our dog knows his boundaries very well. All we have to do now is put a the collar on our dog and he will stay a good 10 feet away from where he knows he will get a jolt. Even without the collar, he stays in the back yard. When we go for a walk, he waits until we pick him up and carry him across the "invisible line" that he knows he can't cross by himself.

The only thing bad about the wireless fence is it makes a circle. Most yards aren't perfect circles so you end up cutting off part of your property.
It took me about a day to put the 500ft wire in the ground-by hand-in my yard.

I'm in the same boat. Che just bought a new place, and fences are prohibited. But electric is ok. Our dog has lived in his fenced yard and had free run throughout his life...till now. He hates the collar. I gotta of something about it, but have to wait until the ground thaws out in the spring.

We are a unique situation, as we butt up to the woods. I want to burry the line in the trees, so he can run up to the edge. Getting around the sides of the house will be difficult as it necks down to somewhere are 10' wide. I'm afraid if I use the line inside the trees, he won't pass through, in fear of getting zapped. So my desire to put the line I the trees. Which will be a pain in the ass. I'm sure

I'm going to be on about 2 acres, but I think that should be enough if we put it out back for the dog.

I worked for IF for about a year and a half. Trained a couple hundred dogs, from a teacup poodle that would fit in your hand to a number of 100+lb labs...only saw it not work on 1 dog, which was about 12 years old, stubborn, and mean (was strictly a coon hunting dog, not a pet). Even had a customer that had a 100% wolf on the system, although it used 2 of the strong collars with 8 contact points.

Just contact your local IF dealer and have them give you a quote. They can usually also provide some references if you'd like to check around to see local success stories.

We bought an Innotek, installed it ourselves, and have been happy with the product. I don't recall which model it is, but it has a remote that we use with the collar when we are away from home. I have a SportDog remote and collar that I have used for years while running on the paths. We used an edger to cut the path as johnyrrr mentioned. Everything was pretty basic and easy to install. Our Jack has learned her boundaries and will stay in the yard even if she doesn't have the collar on.
