I know there are lots of scanners out there and some offer more functionality than others when you are dealing with the non-vehicle specific type scanners like a tech II

I do mostly European (BMW & Mercedes), but still need functionality for all brands.

Currently I'm using a older Launch X431 that does the basics OK, but I want to get into some newer technology and mine is only updated to 2010.

Can anyone out there recommend a good scanner? I know most people use the snap-on, but is there something out there better for maybe a better value?

What kind of budget do you have for a scanner?

I have had good luck with Snap-on MODIS and SOLUS. I havent used one in a few years but they seems to be very useful for advanced diag

Look into OTC... You won't be disappointed...

I really like the autel scanners. really depends on what your trying to do the snap on scanners offer a lot more with diagnostic and how to fix.

Used to work for SPX Service Solutions (now Bosch) who owns OTC and did some of the development for some of their tools. Lets just say some tools are better than others lol. I have not had any exposure to some of their newer products like the Genisys Touch or Encore. The encore is enticing to me because it is only something like $1,800 new and has bi-direcitonal capabilities.

Autel actually uses stolen code and is/ was being sued if that means anything to you. I know they are cheap compared to anything comparable, but I don't know how their customer service is if you need it/ what it will be in the future. Here is a link for the Ford lawsuit: https://www.eff.org/files/2015/01/05/ford_v_autel_complaint.pdf

Another scan tool I have though about getting is the Matco MaxMe. Only $850 new and you only pay for subscriptions for OEM's you need. Each OEM is $20 a month and you can cancel it whenever. I think a full subscription is like $100 or $120. I don't think it would make sense for people who work on many diffenerent makes, but a DIY'er its great. It is always updated.

anyone know what the cheapest one is to monitor IAT intake air temps

I use a wifi scanner with an app. There is one called carista that is specific for euro cars. I wanted it for my audi, but it doesn't have wifi support for android.

I use dashcommand for my audi and it is awesome for diagnostics and even clearing codes.
