whats underneath the chrome on a oem 2011 charger wheel

It depends on the size but it's quite a bit. It's actually inefficient to add all the adhesive and plastic while maintaining wheel stiffness. There's going to be a big trend in the industry going away from Clads.

Yeah sounds like a good idea for producers but bad idea for the consumers

....and 2 out of those 4 components came from the biggest/best plater.

It came from the factory with the tarnished crosshair.

I guess I have a bit of an issue with chromed plastics. They rarely look "legit" to me. I mean, you can tell it's plastic from a mile away, and it often looks cheap. Not so much the wheels on cars, but fender vents, grills and trim.
I've noticed though that GM vehicles tend to have the most plastic-looking chrome.

You can thank OEM design studios and automotive trends driven by the consumers for a need to have their "bling".

i worked in a tire shop for 6 years... trust me, chrome is only good on a summer car in MI. as soon as the chrome pits then peels its a never ending process. the best you can do is put grind all the oxidation off and apply bead sealer. the peeling will eventually get to the face and ruin the looks as well. normally it starts around the valve stem causing nasty slow leaks. the clad does not look as good, and dulls very fast, but the rims hardly ever corrode.

Yea they do this because the wheel lip where the bead seals corrodes and eats the wheel making it impossible to hold air because of the cheap single layer chrome they used to put on them. Gm caddy wheels were the worst! You would get 2-3 years out of them and have to buy new rims because the beads couldn't hold air!

It stared costing them thousands because it is a power train warranty coverage piece and instead triple chroming shit like you are supposed to, they glue bullshit on rims now because its cheaper and doesn't affect the lip where the bead seals it.

Since when is a wheel a power train covered component? That is highly unlikely.
