Yea they do this because the wheel lip where the bead seals corrodes and eats the wheel making it impossible to hold air because of the cheap single layer chrome they used to put on them. Gm caddy wheels were the worst! You would get 2-3 years out of them and have to buy new rims because the beads couldn't hold air!

It stared costing them thousands because it is a power train warranty coverage piece and instead triple chroming shit like you are supposed to, they glue bullshit on rims now because its cheaper and doesn't affect the lip where the bead seals it.

I know they hold up to salt better too than a full face chrome wheel would with pitting too

The dealer told me they were just chrome hubcaps

Same thing as our 2010 Escape. Makes cleaning the wheels a royal PITA since there is always dirty water running out from between the "hubcap" and wheel lip after you wash the car.

That's how all chrome clad wheels are.

This is what a "decladded" GMC wheel looks like polished up.

Way better polished up!
Yea the EPA hit hard on the chrome chemicals and disposial of them. that is the main reason some rims are so expensive. A nice triple plated (copper, Nickle, chrome) job looks way better than just a chrome dip and last way longer.

When I worked at discount in 05, we had so many dts Cadillacs and old people coming in because their tires wouldn't hold air because moister got under the chrome between the tire an lip and ate the aluminum so bad is wouldn't seat.the chrome just peeled off like wet paper. There was a lot of Very very angry old people was a common thing. So they would buy the cheapest MB motoring wheels and put them on their 2-3 year old cars.

WOW, this all comes as news to me! so the nice 20 inch chrome clad wheels on the new F150s are the same as this?

Yup, the same. My dad's Ram is also that way.

Speaking of my dad's Ram. I ranted about it in a past thread. Well, it just had it's third fender replaced ('09 1500). So that makes three fenders, a crosshair grill, and a bumper all replaced due to rusting/tarnish. Good times. :D

you cant do good chrome in this country anymore, well not cost effective

Not true....2 of the 3 biggest plastic trim platers reside right here in the good 'ol USA....

....and 2 out of those 4 components came from the biggest/best plater.

thats plastic chrome, im talking about getting metal chromed, metal chrome cannot be done in this country cost effective 3-4 times as much as overseas

So how much more do you pay for the chrome hubcaps over the painted wheel?

It depends on the size but it's quite a bit. It's actually inefficient to add all the adhesive and plastic while maintaining wheel stiffness. There's going to be a big trend in the industry going away from Clads.
