Whether or not anyone on earth has died from anything else at any other point in history, the CDC estimates that over 440,000 people annually die from smoking related illness including nearly ten percent of those from secondhand smoke exposure. That's more than 10 times the amount of people who die in car wrecks, and nearly 1 in every 5 deaths each year. That's more than every death caused by murder, suicide, HIV, AIDS, illegal drug use, and car wrecks combined. By a long shot.
To argue any position besides the one that says smoking is the dominating cause of self-inflicted death and illness in the U.S is similarly ridiculous as holocaust deniers and people who still believe the earth is flat.
I don't care if people do or do not smoke, but the facts are stunningly clear.

The fact remains they are not raising the tax for people to quit. They are raising the tax to use the revenue for the insurance for children program that was started.
Granholm want to increase the Michigan tax more also. I have no idea what she plans for the revenue to go to.
Unfortunately for them a lot of people are just going to quit smoking because they can't afford it and the revenue they expect will be lower.

They always raise taxes to cause people to not do something(which is where the irony of taxing wealth comes from). It's a sin tax, plain and simple.
I'm sure the state has large and significant health care obligations, and a large percentage of the medical costs it is forced to cover come from smoking related illness. If you're not spending one place in government, you're spending it in another.

I'm not a statistician, but what's the average medical bill for a serious medical issue? $5000? $10,000? $25,000? What's the lifetime bill for someone with emphysema or lung cancer? Tens of thousands? Hundreds of thousands? If 440,000 people die annually from smoking related illness, how much money do you think the insurance and medical industries charge to deal with that?
Health care and it's costs to the U.S government and people is the 8 billion pound gorilla in the room, and smoking is one of the primary costs.

Smokers die young, thus saving untold billions in social security and health insurance spending. They save the country money.. Just remember that every time someone quits smoking your taxes are at risk of rising yet again.. (the idea being that they have to make up the short fall)

People as a whole won't quit smoking. They will bitch about $7 a pack for a while and get used to it. I remember my mom saying she was going to quit when they hit $2.00 a pack. She is still smoking like a freight train.
