What's the root cause of a broken forward sprag under very light throttle? 4L60E

I have a truck with a '96 4L60E that hasn't been driven for years (other than a few quick drives). I got it out to take it down the road and it didn't want to go into 2nd gear. I backed up and went forward again (VERY light throttle) and when it actually "went" into 2nd something broke inside the transmission. It almost felt as if it was binding when it should have shifted. At 1st it seemed as I only had reverse but I found out that when I pulled the shifter into 2nd or 1st it had forward movement and reverse so this tells me not the shell, but the forward sprag. It also makes a horrendous noise when the shifter is in 3rd or 4th but goes away if in reverse, neutral, or park.

I've found tons of information on the simple fact that they commonly fail, but I can't find a single reason, other than when abused, and weak parts of WHY they fail. Before I go and replace this I want to know why it actually did what it did so it doesn't occur again upon getting it back together. Is there any reason to believe that a passage or accumulator, or anything else became blocked by sitting for so long and it built up line pressure so high that it hit 2nd too hard, or something along those lines or was it just dumb luck?

Can someone experienced here shed some light?

Talk to "detroitgearbox" on here. He provides great information! Super knowledgeable!

That's kind of who I was hoping would shed some light but didn't want to directly hassle them.

Noise sound like racheting/ clicking ?

Ummmm, rattling, clanking, I guess, Not like when my other one crapped the sun shell splines, that was more of a whirring or buzzing type sound if that makes sense.

Well finally got it out and replaced it so I tore it down to see what let go. Here it is; reverse/lo??? Got a bunch of good parts and case from and out of a '96 4L60E now, lol.

Planetary and a few other unrecognizable parts - nice! Might want to make sure you have a good ground going to the back of the engine/bell housing. I have seen them come apart like this when there is a ground issue, but usually under a load. Good tell-tale is that the parts will be magnetic.

And BTW, thanks for the info on the MAF Modules! LOL

I agree with all of the above, but 1996 GM trucks are unique as they have known computer issues that cause low line pressure. This often shows up as no third. You can Google for the details, but no matter what else is done, make sure you check the VCM part number and or the presence of an added connector to connector ground/jumper wire.
