I have a truck with a '96 4L60E that hasn't been driven for years (other than a few quick drives). I got it out to take it down the road and it didn't want to go into 2nd gear. I backed up and went forward again (VERY light throttle) and when it actually "went" into 2nd something broke inside the transmission. It almost felt as if it was binding when it should have shifted. At 1st it seemed as I only had reverse but I found out that when I pulled the shifter into 2nd or 1st it had forward movement and reverse so this tells me not the shell, but the forward sprag. It also makes a horrendous noise when the shifter is in 3rd or 4th but goes away if in reverse, neutral, or park.
I've found tons of information on the simple fact that they commonly fail, but I can't find a single reason, other than when abused, and weak parts of WHY they fail. Before I go and replace this I want to know why it actually did what it did so it doesn't occur again upon getting it back together. Is there any reason to believe that a passage or accumulator, or anything else became blocked by sitting for so long and it built up line pressure so high that it hit 2nd too hard, or something along those lines or was it just dumb luck?
Can someone experienced here shed some light?
