What's everyone's opinion of the new 1000 foot track for the nitro cars?

The decision, made in the wake of the tragic accident that claimed the life of former world champ Scott Kalitta June 21, only affects the Top Fuel and Funny Car classes – Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle and all of the Sportsman classes will continue to duel for 1,320 feet -- and was characterized by NHRA as a "step that is being taken while NHRA continues to analyze and determine whether changes should be made to build upon the sport's long standing safety record, given the inherent risks and ever-present dangers associated with the sport."

NHRA made a major change in its 57-year-old rules by shortening its traditional quarter-mile run to 1000 feet for nitro-fueled Top Fuel ...

I agree it is safer but it will be just a matter of time until they start going faster. Remember the 8000 RPM rev limiter didn't hurt for too long.

Tell me whats so bad about a 320 foot difference?

I could careless I don't watch NHRA anyways.

Yes i think it will be safer! But i see it being that big of a fator in keeping a car from losing control, bursting into flames, or flipping. I see teams finding away to go faster in the shorter distance. but i do see it giving them more room to stop.

I copied this info from another site. Several people have used Google Earth to "measure" the shut-off distances of several tracks. Apperently Google Earth has a satallite imigery system that enables users to "pace off" the distance from the end of the quarter mile to the end of the shut-off area (or beginning of the sand trap area). Again, these measurments (which are not 100% accurate) are from the end of the quarter mile to the end of the shut-off area, not the total length of the track.

Englishtown - 2240'
Houston - 2620'
Gainseville - 3350'
Dallas - 2760'
Atlanta - 2250'
Memphis - 2560'
Pomona - 2023'
Sonoma - 2558'
Las Vegas - 2500'
Denver - 2330'
Maple Grove - 2218'
MIR - 2900'
Atco - 2620'
Cecil County - 2340'
Tulsa - 4000'

Some people also measured the length of the sand traps too.
Englishtown - 97'
Maple Grove - 265'
MIR - 156'
Atco - 122'
Cecil County - 96'

There is plenty of shutdown area, and its tough to see but there is ..... a concrete barrier at the end of a shorter than normal run off. ...

Quite a bit of talk about it out here on the net....

Back in the 80's I thought they had reached the limits of what clutches and tires could handle in the Quarter mile, and I always wanted to see some T.V. show like Myth Busters try to set up a Dragster and Track with a Gear Setup, Track Rail etc and see how many G's and what speed and times could be acheived without the use of Tires.........

Hey guys its a SHORT TERM measure NHRA has said that it is not perminent its just in place till they find a better permanent solution (IMHO that means HUGE HUGE shutdown areas)

Why isn't the measurement of Norwalk's shut down there? Just curious, I think I've heard it was one of the longer ones plus it has absolutely nothing but corn field for a long distance after it. Notice that they waited until AFTER Norwalk to institue the short track but did it before Denver, which has a shorter shut down than most.

Knee-jerk rule that is a bad idea. I'm surprised it has got this far to be honest.
