My 4 year old daughter has a severe tree nut allergy, she attends a local pre school and when we enrolled here we made the three teachers aware of it. Fast forward to today they have a Valentine's day party the kids exchange gifts, cards, candy etc just before class is out. I pick up my daughter Today and in the car she starts telling me about her candy which includes snickers, reeses cups and some other stuff. I am livid that she has this in her posetion and call the school and the teacher said we posted a note saying we have kids with nut allergys but we dont screen what they share. Am i jumping the gun by wanting to take her out of this school? Sorry about the long read and grammar.

Mike I fully understand your story. My 4 year old daughter was having random reactions so we finally took her to an allergist last month and she also has a severe tree nut allergy (peanuts are fine though). They had her schools Valentines party today too and luckily my wife was off work so she went to the party and made sure there was no accidental contact. We let her teachers know and the school does keep her epipen on tap just in case.

IMO, taking her out of the school is not the right thing to do. Your daughter (and mine) are going to deal with this their entire life, or until they outgrow it. Moving her to another school won't avoid the problem, you are just going to have to teach her to be the wiser so she knows what to eat and what not to eat.

Best of luck in whatever route you take, let us know what you decide.

So a 4 year old gave another 4 year old some candy and it's the teachers fault? It just seems to me that stuff like that is going to happen with kids. You can't monitor every single thing every kid does every minute of the day.

i'd agree with soap.

Maybe to bring a little more attention to the situation, have a meeting with the school to explain your concerns.

x2 on making sure the school has a Epipen on hand

With so many kids with different allegies I'd think that they should just have a no sharing policy and nip it in the bud. Kind of sucks but it's a sign of the times.

we were assured by the teachers that they are very stringent about the allergy situation because other kids have the allergy aswell. That being said one would think they would atleast monitor the situation. Lets not forget i pay tuition for this class and have provided a very detailed list of safe candy and foods and made it clear not to give it to my kid if it was not on the list.

Peanuts aren't considered tree nuts, is the kid allergic to tree nuts or both?
yes im aware of this, my daughter has a tree nut allergy, the other kid a peanut allergy. She was given a snickers that says on the label may contain almonds. And for the most part if a label dosent say nut free facility it can be cross contaminated or processed on the same line as something that has nuts.

up untill i found out my daughter had the allergy i never delt with food allergys, you would be suprised how many foods contain nuts.

If there's a kid with a peanut allergy and your daughter with tree nuts the whole facility should be "nut" free

You would think that but it's not the case. My daughters old daycare was free of any type of nut, nothing was allowed in the building. Her new daycare is not free of anything, all foods are allowed.........and there are several kids with different types of allergies (mine included).

Yep. I was just talking to my coworker about the tree nut/peanut allergies. She said at her daughter's school, the teacher banned any candy that may contain either, so even chocolate is off the table.

What i'm curious to know is why are the recent generations coming up with allergies all of the sudden? It was unheard of 20 some years ago. What changed that's making kids (and now adults) allergic? :dontknow:

It's mostly genetic. When 2 people have a child, if one parent has an allergy and the other doesn't, the child has a 33% likelihood of developing allergies. If both parents have an allergy, it raises to a 70% likelihood in the child. Also, if a person is very ill and exposed to allergens, they can develop allergic reactions to them because the already-compromised immune system is interpreting it as an attack and responding accordingly ;)

Not all chocolate has peanut/tree nut allergies. Hershey Kisses for example are safe from both.

For sure. I agree with the school though, better safe than sorry. Fruity candy is still allowed, so they aren't totally fucked

I think the allergies were around 20 years ago too.....its just people didn't pay that much attention to it.
