So here is the story.
A few months ago, I went to meet a buddy out who was on a party bus with his other group of friends who of I have only seen a few times before; long story short they leave the one guy at the bar. Now this guy I have talked with before, pretty cool cat, fun to hang out with, and we will call him Hugo.
I am driving my truck home, which is only about 5 minutes of back roads from the bar, after I had a few beers, but was no where near drunk. I talked Hugo into just staying the night at my house so he didn't have to drive as I thought he was not in the best of shape to drive. When we arrived at my house, he said he wanted to drive out to where the party bus was at, which was about 30 minutes away. I instantly said no way, its 2:00 am and im whipped, im going to bed. He then insisted he went out there, as I guess there was some trim at that party. I told him if he really wanted to go and felt good enough to drive, take my Grand Am and drive that out there. Now this car isn't exactly nice, but not a complete peice of shit either. Its my go to work car, gets decent fuel economy, and does me well.
Next morning I get a call, says he accidentally went off the road with the car, but its still drivable and not too bad. I am completely understandable and just say lets take it over to my buddies and he can look at it and do it on the side, as it will be cheaper. He shows up, and its a bit more than just a little off road. The hood, headlights, right fender, right mirror, bumper cover, foglights are all garbage, left side is all scraped up, ground effects gone, and pushed back the core support into the motor. Along with this, the connector for the AC compressor was broken off and dirt jammed up in the engine.
My friend did all the body work, at around $1500 and he paid for most of it, and I did alot of the work as well as to save him money. I finally get the car back the other day, and I start it up and move it, and notice a motor noise. I open the hood and rev it, the car has a horrible rod knock. So now the motor is toast.
I did not even think about checking the motor as I thought Hugo would have told me if it was making noises, but he didn't. I know it wasn't my buddy who dropped the car off as he literally lives about 1/4 mile down the road.
What should I do about this? The car really isn't worth a new motor, however I am now out a car and drive 45 miles a day to work and my truck is killing me on fuel. I asked Hugo what I should do, and he doesn't know either.
Pretty shitty situation all the way around.
Side notes about this car - I just put new head gaskets on, new tune up, new front tires, recharged the a/c, and did an alignment. Its a 1999 Grand Am GT.
