So here is the story.

A few months ago, I went to meet a buddy out who was on a party bus with his other group of friends who of I have only seen a few times before; long story short they leave the one guy at the bar. Now this guy I have talked with before, pretty cool cat, fun to hang out with, and we will call him Hugo.

I am driving my truck home, which is only about 5 minutes of back roads from the bar, after I had a few beers, but was no where near drunk. I talked Hugo into just staying the night at my house so he didn't have to drive as I thought he was not in the best of shape to drive. When we arrived at my house, he said he wanted to drive out to where the party bus was at, which was about 30 minutes away. I instantly said no way, its 2:00 am and im whipped, im going to bed. He then insisted he went out there, as I guess there was some trim at that party. I told him if he really wanted to go and felt good enough to drive, take my Grand Am and drive that out there. Now this car isn't exactly nice, but not a complete peice of shit either. Its my go to work car, gets decent fuel economy, and does me well.

Next morning I get a call, says he accidentally went off the road with the car, but its still drivable and not too bad. I am completely understandable and just say lets take it over to my buddies and he can look at it and do it on the side, as it will be cheaper. He shows up, and its a bit more than just a little off road. The hood, headlights, right fender, right mirror, bumper cover, foglights are all garbage, left side is all scraped up, ground effects gone, and pushed back the core support into the motor. Along with this, the connector for the AC compressor was broken off and dirt jammed up in the engine.

My friend did all the body work, at around $1500 and he paid for most of it, and I did alot of the work as well as to save him money. I finally get the car back the other day, and I start it up and move it, and notice a motor noise. I open the hood and rev it, the car has a horrible rod knock. So now the motor is toast.

I did not even think about checking the motor as I thought Hugo would have told me if it was making noises, but he didn't. I know it wasn't my buddy who dropped the car off as he literally lives about 1/4 mile down the road.

What should I do about this? The car really isn't worth a new motor, however I am now out a car and drive 45 miles a day to work and my truck is killing me on fuel. I asked Hugo what I should do, and he doesn't know either.

Pretty shitty situation all the way around.

Side notes about this car - I just put new head gaskets on, new tune up, new front tires, recharged the a/c, and did an alignment. Its a 1999 Grand Am GT.

Never lend anything to anyone else if you cannot live without it. Those items will never come back or will return like your Grand Am.

Lesson learned.

Good luck.

Go see Matt at Varsity Ford about a focus or festiva! Or find a used Cobalt for 5 grand. Cruise craigslist for an engine or call Darko at Pacific motors.

I would say not much but call it a lesson learned......You really can't trace that is how the motor let go. Even though im suer it is, you can not proove it. loaning car for a drunk friend = bad idea.......take it and run. Sorry about your car tho!!!!

Motors are way cheaper than 1500. I would of took the 1500 ant bought a new beater before i fix a grand dam

I would say it is a lesson learned unfortunetly. I'm no lawyer, but since you gave him permission I don't know how you would recoop any type of money to cover the damage. Sucks man, hopefully you can talk to the guy and lay it out there for him and he can give you some cash for it. Good luck.

Yeah, it is just a pretty shitty situation all the way around. The guy is 6'6" and built, the last thing I wanted to tell him was no, he can't. It was one of those things that I was just trying to be nice and help a guy out, and it turns out im being left out to dry.

So if "Hugo" said "Hey I'm gonna bang you in the ass" I bet you could have said "No" then..................or may not

You're kind of fucked. Unless he's a good friend and offers to help with the expense I would assume (not a lawyer) you're fucked.

A motor is prolly 500$ for a used low mile one. Switching it out is going to be the bitch. And hey it would y hurt to ask for help, never know. And if he argues tell him at least it didn't cost him a 6000$ DUI/OWI and a night in the clinker, ore dead or someone else dead.

Should have left Hugo at the bar...

Correction, Hugo should on not missed the bus. I never understood how people In a group can miss their bus, cruise ship ect. It's like they are more worried about their drink or w/e than their ride.

I would've never let someone who could be even tipsy drive one of my cars. Way to much on the line if they hurt/kills someone.

Sounds like a life lesson......

I said he had a few drinks, its not like he was falling all over the place. Most of the reason as to why he crashed was due to him being unfamiliar with the area, it is a common place where he wrecked.

Either way, I guess I will talk to him and see how he wants to handle this. Worse case is im out a car.
