What type of welding do you like?

you could get a brand new miller 200dx with a water cooled torch and everything else you need for about 4k......

or you could get a thermal arc 185 with everything for less than 2400...its air cooled, but for most work that's fine as long as you can be patient...an ac/dc inverter tig for less than 2400 with everything but the bottles, that's not too bad

The welding classes i took had set ups like this .. the instrucor said they were right around 14k..

but they would do mig tig, arc and spool gun from one supply very sweet set ups..

yeah, the sky's the limit, but i'd be interested to see how you plan on getting your money's worth out of that industrial strength set-up? that's a pretty big jump from the little mig you've got now:wink:

your original post stated that you couldn't afford a nice tig set-up, just figured i'd let you know that there are some top notch options for well under 5 figures.

I never said i wanted to get my moneys worth outa it.. :laugh:

I'm one of those people who just buy what i like and dont worry about if it will pay for it self or not..
 
Nice bead 1BadAir.Good penetration and consistancy.Looks like ARC?I like tungston inert gas(TIG) myself.Im a toolmaker,and that and Micro Laser welding are all I ever use.TIG is pretty easy once someone shows you how to do it,its all practice after that.Need to have a bit of hand and foot coordination though(using both hand and 1 foot at same time)sometimes both feet if you are using a rotating chuck on a round build up."fun"!But Micro Laser is like no other welding.Have to look into a microscope and the laser head moves with a joystick/foot pedal control.Can lay beads as thin as .002 on steel.alum,titanium,just about any metal.

right on

get something with an inverter though for sure......welding aluminum with an inverter welder is a dream.....you can adjust the hertz instead of using high frequency, so you can keep a sharp point, and the control it gives you is unreal....
