what to do about neighbor's dogs

I'm a dog lover, I really am. In fact my G/F has a 5lb maltese and 10lb mutt. Well the neighbor behind us has a german shepard and a pitbull

Whenever I'm in the yard, or the dogs are in the yard, their dogs go bizzerk The german shepard stands on its back legs and front legs over the chain link fence going crazy. I swear one of these days it'll jump over that fence. the pit bull just runs back and forth barking like it wants to play.
If either come over that fence, I'm taking a shovel, 2x4, whatever is handy and blasting it upside the head.

The owners (who I haven't met yet) don't seem to care. They let the dogs in the back yard for hours at a time... the dogs bark at the squirrels, birds, clouds, frickin' everything - nonstop.

Recommendations? How should I handle this? I'm thinking of putting up a wood stockade fence, but I'm sure this will piss off the dog owners. I guess the previous owner's dog used to run back and forth along the fence with these dogs and were friends, but it seems like the German Shepard wants to eat both my g/f's dogs. (which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but...)

ahhhh.... city life.

i think I'll take a picture and post it up tonight.

I've told my neighbors dogs to be quiet when I am in the yard and it's barking at me. Sometimes it listens, and other times it doesn't. I figure if they hear me telling it to quiet down, maybe they will take some initiative and try to keep it quiet as well. It worked to a point. They are pretty good about not letting her bark too much. But she still LOVES to bark & run the fence with my dogs even with the wooden privacy fence between them.

Put up a fence. If they don't care enough to train the dog not to constantly bark, why care if the owners are pissed?

Train them, I use a pop can with pennies an rocks in it. It makes them shut up most of the time. Just go up by them an shake it really quick an if they it's seems to shut them up say "enough" in a firm voice! An just repeat if nessasry

Exactly, use a firm voice and the dogs should listen to you. That worked on my neighbors dog.

Oh, they also make those anti-bark thingy's. You hang it on your side of the fence. It uses batteries. When your neighbors dog barks it emits a high frequency noise the dogs don't like and is supposed to either quiet them down or will make them go to another part of their yard.

Not sure how it would affect your dogs though. Saw it in a pet magazine once and seriously considered it when my neighbor on the other side had a very noisy dog that loved to bark. Just didn't want it to bug my dogs too.

I have a dog that is very shy. She was a shelter dog and is scared to death of people. That being said, she's a coonhound and barks at anything she doesn't like. So if you were to walk by, she'll bark nonstop at you till you're out of sight. If you look at her, she'll run and hide. Perhaps these dogs are similar. Opal wouldn't hurt you unless you did something to one of us maybe, but she's just noisy. I know some breeds are this way, and it has nothing to do with training. Opal is very well behaved, but she just barks at anything she can.

Talk to the neighbor. Ask if you can give treats to the dogs too. If the neighbors are not willing to help, ask them if it is ok for you to help. Ask to be able to go in the yard with them, with the dogs. Chances are if the dogs get to know you real well they will listen and not be aggressive or be scared of you :dontknow:

The shepherd is a natural alpha and typically only gives that up to the male in the house. So you either meet the neighbors and join the pack... or you take that bitch to the ground and make him your beta when nobody is home. :)

Seriously though... the coin can will break the behavoir by breaking their concentration and your low firm voice helps establish dominance. Try to avoid looking directly into his eyes until you either join the pack or break the behavoir. It's a challenge until you are the top dog to him.

The shepherds therory is that if they are loud enough you will run. If he sees you talking with the family over the course of a week he'll pretty much drop the barking down to the normal level of "please come scratch my back" begging. :D

My neighbors dog is equally as worthless, actually more worthless. It attacked my brother's g/f and my dogs last year. Luckily my dogs stood their ground and fend off that white german piece of fuck. Anyways, the cops ahd to be called and the neighbors hate us for it, but their dog ran into the road at her. Anyways, the dog STILL barks and is worthless and they sometimes tell it to stop. If the dog barks at everything, the owner is the one to blame. My dogs dont really bark at all, and if they do it's at a squirrel or something, then they stop. Ugh, I hate our neighbors. :)

Anyone have experience with this? Also, what kind of dog is pictured on that site? Maybe Aussie Shepherd?

My parents dog will bark uncontrollably out of excitement anytime someone comes home. Wonder if this would work?

I've heard mixed reviews on it.

I can say I have the same problem and I can tell you my 6' privacy fence didn't do a damn thing to stop it. The neighbors kitty corner behind me have a doberman that they leave out all the time. That damn dog will bark for a half hour straight if I am in the back yard. Anytime Khan or I step foot in the back yard he barks non stop. I have literally heard him bark for that 1/2 or more. The neighbors don't care. Occasionally they come to the door and call him, but he doesn't come and they don't bother getting him and bringing him in. I have come home from work at 3 am and he is outside barking. Quite the general nuisance IMO.

I have tried the can with coins. I have tried the Ah, AH. I have tried being stern and telling him to leave it or no. I have yelled will you shut the fuck up...didn't work, but made me feel a little better

Some people just don't seem to understand they live around neighbors.

My grandpa used to toss a few firecrackers in the neighbors yard when theyd start barking. Shut em up everytime.

Easy solution. My neighbors behind my house let their dogs back till no end, and even watch them back from their back door and won't do shit about it. I figured out an easy solution... Extention cord+radio pointed right at the fence light pointed towards their house=them controlling their dogs within seconds now.

talk to them.. if it dont stop call the police and a file a noise complaint.. it helped cut back A LOT on our neighbors dogs
