The 400 can easily be had for 3k with everything you need. It's a GM trans and very strong and very dependable. It uses less power than the C6 and is lighter than the C6. You do need a special bellhousing from JW and a JW flexplate to use it, as well as a custom driveshaft and crossmember. There are other ways to make it work, but that's the best way. I had one in my car in 05 and it took everything we threw at it. They're great transmissions.
 
10lbs 5hp are IMO not worth the hassle. A c6 bolts up. Uses stock bellhousing and off the shelf readily available converters. Its a good unit and there are plenty of cheap easy to find parts to drop one in with minimal effort. If he was going all out drag racing and every 10th counted the 400 would be the advantage.

Not too many fast cars running Ford tranny's out there. I'd go T400 also
depending on the weight of the car. Powerglides are for light cars.
$3000 will buy you a pretty stout unit in either case.
