Not to be debbie downer but if you are planning on opening a yard just to sell to the public you will fail they (john q public) are 2 cheap to pay the bills, body shops are where the $$$$ is also be ready to deal with the "old school" guys at the auction who will run up the prices on every car you bid on to drive you out salvage yards are a very rough buisness. I worked in a few and have several buddies who own them its not easy buisness

well most of the bigger auctions for salvage vehicles are purely online now, so there are no politics with people outbidding others to be dicks because its anonymous now.

I dont plan on specifically selling to the public, but I just figure this is a good way to get our name out there. I do realize body and collision shops are where most of the business will be at, but we got like 3 cars right now and got a while till we get to that point :lmao:

well i purchased the vbulletin software and am struggling through getting it setup.

now as far as the website forum I was hoping I could have peoples comments on how they think it should be setup. I was thinking about setting it up something like this below. In each "make" forum there will be 3 subforums for 1. complete vehicles, 2. wrecked vehicles for parts, 3. vehicle parts. If the website eventually gets lots of users the more popular "make" forums are going to go very fast and peoples stuff will get bumped off the first page very quick, but since its not a vehicle specific setup I can't see many people browing through the pages of the forum since the parts wont be specific at all to what they are looking for. I would like to have it setup as more of a search oriented way of finding parts.

thats similar to how things are setup here with car-part.com. All the junkyards have access to all the other junkyards inventories. What i'm trying to do here is get away from that setup and have an online community where people can sell their parts to other people instead of having to rely strictly on junkyards for finding their used parts. Craigslist can be nice for this, but it sucks when you want to search nationwide for something hard to find.

at the beginning for a long time it will be free for everyone. If the website ever gets to the point where its really booming there will be options for people to upgrade their accounts to a membership account which will get them added benefits through the site....as far as benefits go once the user base is established with a free account you may be limited to the amount of sale ads you can list, may only have 20pm max, etc. I'm thinking it may also be a good idea to do a small fee if the website gets super huge (like .50 per ad or something) to weed out scammers who don't want to have their credit card information on the site. I will also have sponsorship open to other salvage yards who want to have the added benefits and be able to advertise their place of business for a fee.

It's hard work your right but running any business is hard. My family owned 2 Junk Yards back when you could buy cars very cheap and did very good. Once you get into these auctions and get to know the people it gets a little easier. As we all know it takes money and effort. And you have to be a good buyer. Scared money makes no money... Don't be scared to bid. And Don't think your not gonna lose on some cars and parts because you will, You can't win on all of them.

i really think it should be kept free for people to buy and even sell. What you should do is limit the ammount of free activity. Say for example you can only sell 5 parts per month max for free.... and you could put a similar limit on buying. but if people see an initial fee, they wont use it.

also have you considered having parts for tractors, lawn mowers, four wheelers, and motorcycles? Especially with the new ban on sub-100cc motorcycles (and their parts) there is going to be a lot of people looking for them.

Hell you could even expand this to electronics, but id keep it to motorized vehicles for now.

Hire some help or you'll burn yourself out trying to sweat a bunch of details that you don't really need to know for the overall idea to be successful. Ask me how I know.
